Lucy Markham, Montagu Evans Partner and Historic Environment and Townscape specialist, talks in today’s Property Week about the challenges and opportunities of repurposing heritage assets for residential ➡️ https://lnkd.in/em_Qx7wa “Tension can arise on residential conversions between the measures suited to restoring or protecting heritage buildings and those designed to maximise viability. But with enough research, creative thinking and nous, most listed buildings can be converted. If a building is disused and you are securing its future or repairing it, that is a positive heritage benefit,” she says. “We see more public sector buildings becoming available as councils rationalise their estate and often dispose of listed buildings that are more complicated and limited. These often convert well to residential, and there is good value for them.” Click the link above to read more. Image Credit: Property Week #MEHEAT #MEResidential #Heritage

Have you witnessed the magic of Regent’s Canal? 🛶 🌊 Here is an enchanting entry to our #MappingIslington project from our very own Laura, Programme Manager. "I love the canal. I spent three years living on a narrow boat as a continuous cruiser - that means that I had to keep moving the boat from neighbourhood to neighbourhood throughout the year - I went as far as Stanstead to the north, Roydon to the East and Harefield to the West. But my favourite areas to be moored were in Islington and Hackney. 💜 Living on a boat was an experience glorious and challenging in equal measure. It caused me to feel very connected to nature, and to be much more aware of the environment. I would be considerate of my electricity and water usage because I relied on solar and had to make the water in my tank last, and had to keep a fire going in the winter for warmth. 🍀 I loved waking up and seeing the mist rising on the water in spring, or the ice in winter, or the glorious sunshine in summer. Seeing the birds and people enjoying being by the water. It is such a curious thing, to be on the water and in nature, and to walk up some steps at different points of the canal into vastly different neighbourhoods of London. 🕊 Even though I don't live on a boat anymore, I still love to take the chance to walk there, just a short walk from our office!" ❓📍 What’s your favourite place in Islington and why? Tell us below or via the link in the comments, and we’ll feature it. Your stories bring our community to life! Showcasing a National Treasure with the Great Rivers National Park Alton could be a city where the Mississippi River is seen for what it truly is: a national treasure. Where Alton is a go-to family-friendly outdoor recreation for the entire Midwest. Where the riverfront, the Clark Bridge, Marina, and the historic downtown area have the potential to attract tens of millions of dollars each year for local businesses and tax revenue. How do we get there? The Great Rivers National Park, a 144-mile designated recreation park corridor that would include 135,000 acres and be a beacon of sustainability. It may sound like a big idea and that’s because it is! A project on this scale can only be possible with local, state and national interests and partnerships, with Congress being the final decider in whether an area should be added to the National Park System or whether some other action might be appropriate. No one entity can do this alone and it won’t be a quick process. But AltonWorks believes that the potential is there. With research, collaboration, brainstorming and teamwork, the region could be significantly enhanced by combining the natural assets into one fully managed national park. We know we’re dreaming big but we believe in Alton, and we believe in the future of Alton. Follow along as we highlight steps in our long-term idea to create the Great Rivers National Park and what it might mean to the city. #AltonWorks #AltonIllinois

🌟The Renaissance of Riverview Estates 🌟 Nestled in the heart of the city, Riverview Estates was once a forgotten complex, its potential buried under years of neglect. Our mission was clear: to breathe new life into this 15-unit gem and turn it into a thriving community hub. The Challenge: Riverview Estates was plagued by outdated infrastructure and low occupancy rates. The community’s spirit was dimmed, and the potential for a vibrant, connected neighborhood seemed like a distant dream. Our Role: As project lead, my focus was not just on revitalizing the structures but on rekindling the community’s spirit. We initiated comprehensive renovations, modernizing each unit while preserving the complex’s unique character. Beyond the physical upgrades, we launched community engagement programs, fostering a sense of belonging among residents. The Transformation: The transformation was beyond physical. Yes, Riverview Estates now boasts modern amenities, green spaces, and enhanced security, but the true success lies in the laughter heard in the courtyards, the weekend barbecues, and the impromptu coffee chats among neighbors. Occupancy rates soared to 95%, and resident satisfaction ratings hit record highs. The Value Added: This project wasn’t just a financial win; it was a testament to the power of community. By investing in people as much as in property, we not only enhanced the asset’s value but also created a vibrant community where people are proud to call home. Riverview Estates stands as a beacon of transformation, showcasing what’s possible when vision, hard work, and a deep commitment to community come together. #SuccessStoryTuesday #CommunityTransformation #RiverviewRenaissance

1moWhat a great project to be involved in Louise Norris. Finding ways to repurpose historic buildings cost-effectively whilst encouraging community engagement is not easy but plays such an important part of regenerating towns and cities. Well done to all involved.
