If World Rugby use this study as a vehicle for defending the status quo then it will be offensive to those players that have suffered contact injury as a result of the impact of head forces in collisions as well as fans and current players. Reliance or use of such a study will not change perception of the game of rugby. Continual utilisation of technology to monitor impacts and the implementation of training and match day protocols to protect players will show that the game is serious about how it can be perceived. I loved playing and enjoy watching rugby. I have watched the game change for a range of reasons, some better than others. It is important that the voices of experts are listened to, but also that common sense prevails. And to be honest common sense does not suggest that forces on the head of community rugby players are often on par with or even lower than those experienced during general exercise. I am hopeful that World Rugby take the report referred to in the New Zealand Herald in proper context with the range of peer review studies that are available and properly promote the myriad of safety initiatives being funded and introduced at all levels of the game.

It's quite disingenuous to report that biomechanical impacts im #rugby are no more dangerous than skipping or running, citing "independent" research (which just happens to involve World Rugby, New Zealand Rugby, and Otago Rugby). Our rugby blog is up and today we compare the international youth tournament - U20 Rugby World Cup with the previous tournaments of the early 2000s - the IRB U19 and U21 tournaments. Which competition was better as a sporting product?
