Policies that promote gender equality and increase women’s participation in the field are critical and welcomed by stakeholders. One of such policies is the Africa Mining Vision. Adopted by the African Union in 2009, the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) is a comprehensive plan designed to ensure that Africa gets the most out of its mining resources. 🆕 The 2023 State of the Artisanal and Small-Scale #Mining Sector report is out now! This year's report focuses on the important topic of #GenderEquality. Despite #women playing an important role in #ASM, they are often not accurately represented in the data. This new report examines the key barriers and opportunities to women’s equal and full participation in ASM and provides case studies with examples of how gender equality can be promoted and achieved in ASM. The 2023 State of the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Sector report, focused on SDG5 Gender Equality, is finally released—two years in the making! https://lnkd.in/gmr6qznV Through providing editorial support for this very important publication, I learned so much about the invaluable contribution of women to this sector: DYK that women account for at last one-third of the workforce for ASM mining, which supplies volumes of minerals essential to global industries from jewelry, construction, agriculture, IT, manufacturing, automotive and defense? Unfortunately, gender discrimination and disregard for health, safety, and social protection limits their rights and economic opportunities. They often face poor working conditions, sanitation, and violence, and more often are relegated to low-paying roles and are 90 TIMES more at risk of death than men. This report urges policymakers to address the distinct hazards women face to improve their occupational health and safety in mining environments and underscores the need to further empower women’s associations and female-led professional groups, which have been critical in improving the visibility of women ASM miners and advancing gender reforms in mining. #WorldBank #Delve #responsiblemining #sdgs2030 #sdg5 #genderequality #mining

The mind shift ,the change in perception, the willingness to involve women in the mining activities and abolishing some of the cultures that were once considered as a taboo to foster gender equality and inclusion is one of the greatest goals that as an organization we are on the journey of trying to achieve.Today we had had focused group discussion to share some to the resolutions that the artisanal small scale miners have come up with to end gender based violence in Ikolomani and Shinyalu mining sites. The resolutions discussed are: _Allowing women to own land _Reporting any forms of GBV _Putting an end to kangaroo courts _Not allowing children in the mines

Todays news is a stark reminder of the work that lies ahead. Shockingly, no mining or resources companies made the cut for the WGEA Reporting Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation holders list released today. With 115 companies recognized across all industries, this is a glaring gap.
