Happy Birthday to Helen Keller 🎂, the world’s first blinddeaf person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree and a tireless international advocate for the blind. In 1925, words of inspiration from Helen Keller encouraged Lions Clubs around the world to help cure blindness. Addressing the Lions International Convention in Ohio, USA she said, "Try to imagine how you would feel if you were suddenly stricken blind today." Inspiration porn makes me incredibly uncomfortable. We have disabilities, we do not need kudos just because we didn’t shrivel up and die. Instead of praising us for living try: - employing us - paying us properly - providing an accessible workplace - not talking down to us - not using our disabilities to promote yourself as inclusive - not using our successes to promote yourself full stop - not undermining us because we do it better - providing access to growth and promotion. Don’t praise us for overcoming barriers - stop erecting the barriers and remove any so there is nothing for us to overcome.
On social media or TV, you probably have seen stories of a disabled person being celebrated at their High School prom, or being named an honorary member of their Football team. 6,000 young people with a life changing opportunity, about 244,000 more to go to ensure our most disadvantaged Generation Z have lifetimes defined by their talent and not their circumstances. Of course it is possible. There are more than enough potential mentors and simple connections that transform. And that is in every walk of life, sector and lived experience. I know at firsthand and through the experience of recruiting 20,000 volunteers. The motivation, commitment and resilience of our communities is immense. Our Generation Z have had a devastating cocktail of issues to deal with - COVID isolation, loss of relationships, relentless social media pressure, continuous uncertainty and crisis. There should be no surprise on the inevitable impacts whether mental health or school attendance. And that is before we talk about the education, wealth and opportunity divides. Depressed, read on. There are solutions. In politics and for some there are different definitions of honesty. However there is just one truth. With a new Government it is a great time to face it. Our Generation Z needs the very best of us. It is time for a Gen Z Manifesto. In complexity there are simple solutions. Not policy soundbites but practical and actual transformations. There are more than enough of us across the country who want to and will make this happen. One way - become an MCR mentor to make but also experience a life changing difference. Have a listen to the short radio interview. An hour a week really can make a lifetime of difference. Watch this space for all the ways we will reach all 250,000 that need and deserve a relationship in which they can trust and thrive. We have imagined it and now working on it. A Gen Z Manifesto. A practical guide and a 10 year commitment. This social change will drive sustainable growth, for us all.
