Great read from Joost van Dreunen on the innovation decimation we've seen from many of the public game companies over the last year. Q is: if the same-old ain't working, what's next? Gaming is on the cusp of major new categories that will unlock the next generation of creativity and play. AI, user generated content, and web3. The joy of the Gamesbeat Next Game Changer awards last month—in which Sequence won best blockchain tech company—was to celebrate what the smarties have their eyes set on, which is the future. As I wrote about last week (https://lnkd.in/edn9YSjZ), spend per player is down for the first time in 8 years. As an industry, we are not monetizing as well as we could be. Obviously there are caveats to these data—much of that is player expansion in areas where expendable income is less. Totally makes sense. But some of it is a harbinger of a reality in which the same old tricks no longer work. Many companies are at the forefront of innovating on what's next around these areas. Many, many are not. And rather than invest in the future, they're cutting corners to protect the short term. Sadly, investors who know nothing about the industry reward them for that. We've seen this cycle before. Most of the companies listed below had to go on spending frenzies to acquire studios after they suddenly realized F2P was the future. In some instances, that spending didn't pan out in large part because these game companies didn't build the innovation muscle internally, so they were late to the game and then had no idea how to nurture innovation when the simply tried to buy it. The next cycle is here.

What is in the future for games? Last week me and my fellow panelists Elisabet "Beta" Gretarsdottir, Shams Jorjani and Julien Wera shared our views on it on the Nordic Game conference. As moderator we had the amazing Thomas Bidaux A full room had come to listen as we gave our best predictions Some of the takeaways were - Times of chaos fuels innovation - We will see new types of studios emerging - Interest for different staffing strategies are growing - Leadership and scalability are good skills to improve - Next gen studios need to be flexible and ready to adapt to changes Only time will tell what the future of games will look like I for one am very curious how we will emerge from the current crisis. What learnings we can draw from it and how we move forward Because one thing is certain, people will continue to play games That’s not going anywhere.
