I 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 working with mission-driven organizations, especially non-profits, because they're focused on doing good in this world. Something I've noticed is that non-profits struggle with tracking comms and marketing performance—and with brand and digital marketing in general. Typically, non-profits (especially larger ones) have key messaging down, and it's integrated fairly well across:  → Traditional comms channels like direct mail, TV, PR, etc. → Basic email (donor welcome, thank you, newsletter/general promos but minimal segmentation & automation) → A website → Some paid ads → Organic social 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. Traditional comms, a website, social media, some paid, and organic social media are all necessary, but they're not enough, and they're rarely being measured to really understand performance. Measurement is key. You need to understand where your audience (donors/volunteers/leads) are coming from, where they drop off, what they do before, during, and after they donate, and how to scale your efforts. 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿. For marketing and comms success, non-profits need to learn how to understand their marketing funnel 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 and then focus on: → Channel selection/distribution (email, PR, website, SEO, Ads Grant, paid social, organic social, etc.) → Measurement & reporting → Automation → Personalization

During my recent keynote, "Embracing Community-First Marketing: A New Era for Nonprofits," an overwhelming 96.6% (937 out of 970 respondents) of the live nonprofit audience agreed or strongly agreed that Community-First Marketing is the future of nonprofit growth. This response was both exhilarating and affirming. Unfortunately, I know in my gut that many nonprofits will not launch a true digital community in 2024, or even in 2025, despite the clear direction the future is taking. "Are we doing the best practices becuase they're the best or are we doing them because we are afraid of what's next?" - Xavier Ramsey This incredible quote underscores a critical point about nonprofit innovation and marketing in 2024: it's all too easy to get comfortable with nonprofit "best practices" and resist the inevitable friction and necessary learning that comes with groundbreaking marketing and community building. Great marketing and community building is never comfortable, yet it is always different. Embracing this discomfort and being excited to stumble is what sets the trailblazers apart. "No other expert network has brought me a nonprofit opportunity," marketing executive Lisa Bowman told us. "The scope of what GLG does in that space is significant." Lisa Bowman has been a GLG Network Member since 2016. Today, she’s the CEO of MarketingMojo and chair of the American Marketing Association. She previously served as CMO of The UPS Foundation and United Way Worldwide.   We sat down with Lisa to hear more about her experience with GLG. Responses have been edited for length and clarity: It started when someone reached out about a project for a nonprofit. What a cool way to use my skills as a marketer, I thought.  I appreciated that this was different than my day-to-day. I didn't have to solve a problem. I needed to help frame [clients] thinking and talk through solutions. GLG isn't just working in the commercial sector, but rather at the intersection of purpose and profit, which is a differentiator. The company has the infrastructure to ensure experts get a quick response. It has been such a positive, consistent experience. That speaks volumes to your culture.    The way I approach a GLG call has evolved. Now, I start with: who I am and why I do this work. Then I ask: who do you serve? What’s your mission? Help me better understand the problem. I’ve found this approach – rather than just jumping into a list of questions – leads to richer conversations.    A particularly memorable project was with The Bronx Community Foundation. I live in Atlanta, but am a Chicago native and a spiritual New Yorker. Their work really resonated with me. They ended up in your Fellowship Program. That was cool to see.     I had another client doing work in New York on gun violence, so I connected them to Bronx Foundation and said, 'you guys need to talk.' If I can help any organization, even indirectly, I want to try. Why wouldn't I?

Marketing 🤝 Fundraising There’s a lot of chatter around marketing and sales alignment. For good reason. My friend 🔶🔸Mason Cosby🔸🔶 reminded me over breakfast this weekend of all the ways this plays out with what he’s doing at Scrappy ABM. While it looks a little different at times, the same kind of alignment is needed between marketing and fundraising in the nonprofit space too. Marketing’s job (in short) is to jumpstart new relationships and enlarge the audience of people who care about the cause. The job of fundraising isnt just to raise more dollars but to also thoughtfully build greater levels of connection and trust. For grassroots nonprofits, these roles may fall under the same leader. And for enterprise charities, fundraising and marketing may lie across multiple teams. No matter where you find yourself on the spectrum, marketing and fundraising efforts and functions need to work in concert, not competition, with each other.
