New data show that when ships do not meet the ballast water discharge standard, it is *almost always* due to larger organisms (≥50 μm). These findings are consistent with our results, and they reinforce the importance of sampling and analyzing this size class for effective compliance. The good news is that it's doable!   Kudos to Okko Outinen, Sarah Bailey, Oscar Casas Monroy, Stephanie Delacroix, Sonia Gorgula, Evelina Griniene, Jenni E. Kakkonen, and Greta Srebaliene for their recent paper, which summarizes data from 228 ships over 6 years. 🚢 https://lnkd.in/eiWn8kCj (Outinen et al. paper) https://lnkd.in/ey9YekUW (Drillet et al. paper) #ballast #ballastwater #invasivespecies #biodiversity #imo #shipping #artandscience Image: Barnacle larva collected from the Pagan River, Virginia, USA; photomicrograph taken (by me) with an Olympus Corporation DP-10 digital camera attached to an Olympus SZX12 dissecting microscope. The colored background is possible using a set of prisms and “filters” arranged to achieve Nomarski Differential Interference Contrast (DIC). This optical phenomenon employs light, rather than biological stain or digital alteration, to distinguish different components of specimens. Images can thus be seen in striking color—an “optical staining”—and in exaggerated three-dimensional appearance.

The relationship between particle size and disinfection efficacy has been well researched and acknowledged by the rest of our society when they developed their regulations for water and wastewater disinfection, sewage sludge treatment, and biosecurity wastes, etc. I wish ballast water regulations had benefited from more research work on such relationship, or at least had done more to prevent larger particles from entering ships' ballast water systems in absence of such research. Let's see if the number of type-approved filter-less BWMS will continue to grow...especially when there will be no on-going performance verifications.

I'm going to ignore the compliance implications here for a second and admire the awesome photography! Lisa Drake, PhD I'd be very keen to learn more about the light staining process. I just had my first play with an EP50 today and my photos pale in comparison. Let me know if there is someone who might be able to guide me.
