The book "Ban This Book" by Alan Grat was challenged by Jennifer Pippen a very vocal member of the Moms for Liberty group in Indian River County. As required by state statute, this book went through the challenge process and the review committee determined to keep the book on the shelves of Indian River school libraries. Even the #MomsForLiberty, "book review" site "Book Looks," which rates books on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the least objectionable, they rated this book a 1 with the only "concern" being that the book encourages activism of young children, doesn't find this book objectionable. Yet, the Indian River County School Board has chosen to go against its own review committee and has banned/ removed a book about book bans from their schools because it references books that have been removed from their schools and accused the book of "teaching rebellion of school board authority." Author #AlanGratz had this to say: the removal of this book is "incredibly ironic. They banned the book because it talks about the books that they have banned and because it talks about book banning. It feels like they know exactly what they're doing and they're somewhat ashamed of what they're doing, and they don't want a book on the shelves that calls them out." When will this madness stop. Those that seek to prevent the dissemination of information are NEVER on the right side of history. As librarian, Jo Godwin said "A truly great library contains something in it to offend everyone." Not every book is for every person, and no one is required to read every book on the library shelves. Just because you personally disagree with what's written in a book doesn't make the book inappropriate to keep on library shelves. This book has been positively reviewed by Booklist, Kirkus, Publisher's Weekly, and School Library Journal. All recommend this book for students in grades 3 - 6. It seems that the "free" state of Florida is only free if you believe what those in charge tell you to believe, if you have a dissenting opinion the state is not one of freedom but instead one of tyranny. #StopTheBookBans #FreePeopleReadFreely Florida Library Association, Inc. Librarians can draft up plans that address specific concerns of the school district. Chances are, there’s something specific that school officials are looking to accomplish, whether that’s improving academics or providing students with a wider range of learning resources. Once a librarian understands these goals, they can write their report accordingly, detailing how helping the school library will ultimately help the school as a whole.

📚 In the face of increasing book bans, a powerful movement is rising. Students, educators, and advocates are coming together to protect literary freedom and ensure diverse voices are heard. ✔️ The Challenge of Book Bans Across the nation, book bans have reached record levels, casting shadows over public and school libraries. Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Tennessee have seen the highest numbers of these bans, driven by coordinated efforts to restrict access to diverse literature. ✔️ Community Resistance Despite these challenging times, the power to reverse book bans lies in the hands of parents, kids, and educators. On July 10, children at South Carolina State University marched in protest against book bans, joining voices nationwide to push back against literary suppression. ✔️ Impact on Students Students like Jason from Maine and Ainsley Foster from Indiana University emphasize the importance of diverse books. Students deserve to see themselves reflected in the books they read, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding. ✔️ The Role of Educators and Parents Educators and parents play a crucial role in this fight. By advocating for diverse and inclusive literature, they help create a richer, more comprehensive education for all students. Efforts to ban books undermine the work of media specialists and librarians who carefully curate school collections to meet educational needs. Taking Action It is essential for concerned individuals to take a stand against book bans. Whether through court cases, school district meetings, or community activism, every effort counts. History has shown that collective action can protect our right to read and ensure that all voices are heard. - - - #CelebrateDiversity #DiverseBooksMatter #InclusiveLiterature #EndBookBans

God Bless Texas. It's a phrase used often in Texas, but wow, do we need those blessings now? Our friends in Austin can't figure out how to support our public education system and the essential services it needs to serve our students and our state. The latest news from a district in the Houston area is disturbing (https://lnkd.in/gwWSwkr3) Texas ranks 8th in economy and 16th in financial stability in the latest US News rankings (https://lnkd.in/gZJvkwJk) but needs help finding a way to fund its schools. Education and skill are key to an economy's (and society's) success. Texas is failing, and seeing some of the decisions made by school districts during the last ten years has been disheartening. Politics, fiscal irresponsibility, and, honestly, bad management are compounding the problem, not helping it. Texas needs leadership. Not political rhetoric or power-hungry people trying to climb the ladder. Watching my wife and the teachers, she's worked with over the years; it's clear that they're succeeding despite the system, not through the support of the system. Why do I care to put this on LinkedIn? The kids they're educating today are our future workforce, which in turn helps drive the economy. It isn't very comforting. Thank your teachers and your kid's teachers; they're being given more and more responsibilities, asked to do more with less every day, and aren't compensated appropriately. And, still, most do this for the love of their kids and the fact that they know they're having an impact. Mano DeAyala, Greg Abbott, Spring Branch ISD, Chris Earnest, etc. Let's fix this before it's too late. #keepthestoryalive #GodBlessTexas

It's not controversial - every school should have a library. School libraries should not be the realm of wealthy private schools - not if we care about equity and literacy for all children. As Philip Pullman says in this piece "“The school library is without question the most important room in the entire school, because it contains – or used to contain, or should contain – books that are not required for examination purposes. Books that no one might expect to find. Books on every subject under the sun. Books that some teachers don’t even know are there.” The Australian Library and Information Association and our partners in the Australian Coalition for School Libraries continues to call for every student to have access to a school library. #LibrariesTransform #StudentsNeedSchoolLibraries #AustralianCoalitionForSchoolLibraries https://lnkd.in/g5gpcU3Y

Threats to our libraries can be small in some ways and very large in others. A small number of individuals can create a great deal of havoc. Patrick "PC" Sweeney highlighted the limited number of people pressing for book bans and their hefty devastating impact. Our political leaders need to take stands for strong libraries to ensure their maintenance and adequate funding. True stakeholders also need to voice their concerns to keep their libraries viable and relevant to community needs. #libraries #censorship #libraryfunding #libraryadvocacy

They often referred to lists of books originating in other districts or from online forums. Some had no children in the district, and in nearly 60 cases, the school district didn’t own the books on their lists. https://lnkd.in/eGtnDGPm

I am happy to share that my first new book of the Gifted Children Grown Up series will be released on October 24. I took the advice of many others to shorten my last year's Big Book, The 5 Levels of Gifted Children Grown Up, into something smaller. Here is the first new book from that study. It covers the education years, post-secondary colleges and other options, and the careers the subjects took on ... or not. It shows us the divergence of equally intelligent people who don't have equal access or support while they are young. The book shows us that how we turn out by our twenties is generally not because of how we were as individuals. Some turn out to have better, happier lives than others by their early adulthood. The book shows us many examples of why that is. Basically, it's because they did - or didn't - get what they needed while growing up. There are two more books in this series. https://lnkd.in/gr9qwaez
