The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us—fostering creativity, empathy, and beauty. The arts also strengthen our communities socially, educationally, and economically. In Massachusetts, arts and culture is a $27.2 billion industry—4.2% of the state economy—and supports 135,181 jobs (bigger than construction, education, and transportation). The arts accelerate economic recovery: a growth in arts employment has a positive and causal effect on overall employment (U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis). Springfield’s nonprofit arts industry alone generates $82.4 million in economic activity annually—spending by organizations and their audiences—which supports 1,483 jobs and generates $15.3 million in local, state, and federal government revenue (Americans for the Arts AEP6 study) Randy Cohen MASSCreative Mass Cultural Council Tiffany Allecia M.Ed.

We often work within regeneration contexts in our consultancy work. Frequently people are focusing on buildings and infrastructure in regeneration plans, but we think it's important to talk about cultural regeneration too. People and activity need to be a part of regeneration if it's going to have the impact it should. So it's great to see this article from Arts Council England on cultural regeneration in the West Country. #LetsCreate #CulturalRegeneration #CulturalDevelopment #CulturalConsultancy https://lnkd.in/euvTuDu9

An interesting article from Ruth Bloomfield in the Evening Standard this week spotlighting Peckham and the impact that growing popularity and rising rents is having on the local community. Turner.Works project Peckham Levels is mentioned in the article as an example of positive development in the area. Peckham Levels embodies our approach to delivering places that are both commercially successful and able to meet genuine community needs. Following close collaboration and consultation with the local community, we transformed a derelict car park into a vibrant social and arts space, which provides employment and affordable creative workspace (prioritised for local people), and injects profits back into supporting the community. We applied the same way of thinking when designing Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in Peckham. At its core, Mountview is designed to break down barriers to entry into an historically hard-to-access industry for young people from all backgrounds, also offering affordable spaces for local community arts groups and revenue-driving cafés and bar. As we move forward, let's prioritise projects that seamlessly integrate with the unique character of a place, avoiding the creation of buildings that feel out of place and, inadvertently, displace the very people and businesses that define the community. https://lnkd.in/eqzRiEVm

A really well done study. One major takeaway for any of us involved in evaluating grants or distributing grant money is the disproportionately high number of large budget organizations receiving the bulk of grants funding. This seems to be a recurring theme in other studies and we need to do better in getting to smaller and BIPOC organizations that are in need. #artsfunding #grants
The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs has teamed up with Americans for the Arts to conduct a groundbreaking study unveiling the economic and social significance of Atlanta's nonprofit arts and culture sector. Generating well over $8 million in total economic activity, the arts community proves its vital role in shaping our city's prosperity. Interesting reflection on the role of arts and culture in driving transformational change in cities: "Arts, culture and design play an important, generative role in advancing social outcomes including belonging, civic infrastructure and community participation. There is deep, accepted value in the ways artists and culture bearers lead that type of work; it’s not transactional, its transformational and relationship oriented." Worth holding up as Vancouver reflects on its budget priorities, and the transformative role its Culture/Shift plan can continue to make: https://lnkd.in/gTB7YzyZ

From partly-cipating to fully participating | SNF Dialogues on Civics In an era marked by rapid sociopolitical changes, escalating conflicts, and technological disruptions, civic engagement has become increasingly important. To move beyond mere "partly-cipation" and foster genuine democratic participation, it's vital that we push ourselves to engage deeply with our communities, find collaborative solutions to common problems, and re-define what it means to be a citizen in a modern democracy. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) has prioritized these principles throughout its grantmaking and in this spirit, we are excited to introduce a series of open discussions in the coming months through the SNF Dialogues initiative, aiming to encourage inclusive discussions that bridge the gap between passive involvement and active, meaningful participation in civic life. Interested in supporting artists affected by the closure of MINT gallery? Check out the article below for opportunities to show your support!
"MINT was like a home to me, a place where I could express myself and connect with the community. Losing that so suddenly felt like losing a part of myself." - Honey Pierre On August 9, MINT Gallery, a beloved space for emerging artists in Atlanta, closed its doors, leaving 16 artists without a creative home. Despite the shock, Honey and her fellow artists are forging ahead, finding new places to continue their artistic journeys. However, the loss of MINT is a significant blow to the Atlanta art community. The Community Foundation is providing stipends to help with moving costs, but ongoing support is crucial. Join us in standing with Honey and the remarkable artists who called MINT home. Want to make a difference? Here's how: https://lnkd.in/eBzwDRRY

Art Design Chicago, an initiative of Terra Foundation for American Art in partnership with artists and organizations across the city, is a series of events and exhibitions that highlight Chicago's artistic heritage and creative communities. Ife Williams―artist, educator, organizer, and Senior Engagement Fellow for Art Design Chicago―raises questions like "how can we make space for emergence and experimentation?” through her work with partners in the Art Design Chicago Engagement Learning Community. Learn more about Williams's definition of community engagement and Art Design Chicago via the link in our bio. "Defining community engagement is difficult....My approach is to ask organizations, 'How do you define community?' and 'What are the ways you want to engage and invite that community in?' I’ve found that we often get so excited and maybe get ahead of ourselves, in the desire to shift and increase our engagement that we don’t take the time to really think about the community we are most intently looking to serve. And doing so is not intended to exclude others; rather, there is a narrowing-in and an explicit naming meant to help inform the 'engagement strategies' that we have chosen to implement. Based on my work history in cultural organizing and political movements, I also try to ground these conversations in questions about access, justice, and ethics." https://lnkd.in/gP8FRzQs #ArtDesignChicago #CommunityEngagement #TerraFoundation
