This is a brilliant interview with director Asif Kapadia, so many gems in it and so much helpful advice. I picked some of my personal favourite parts below (and please forgive paraphrasing). https://lnkd.in/e9pBsXin "Have an instinct about what your film is about and what you’re trying to say. Write this down on a post-it and put it above your desk." "You can never screen your film to an audience enough when you are making it. You see totally different things when you watch it with other people." And related to this "We have really bad screenings for all of the films. People will tear the film apart. The act of showing it and an audience seeing it is important. Suddenly I have lots of solutions." "People didn’t think the idea of doing a film without talking heads will work. [This is pre SENNA] "A film where I didn’t shoot any of the rushes was radical at the time." "It doesn’t matter what it looks like. It doesn’t matter what it’s shot on. Get the story emotionally." #documentary #documentaryfilm #documentaryfilmmaking Thom Powers Asif Kapadia

GREAT THINKING NEVER GETS OLD. It's that simple. I worked with the indomitable CD Melissa Webber, ACD Zak Masaki, Jason Tucker (writer) and the super talented Director Jillian Martin and Jim Evans (EP) on this delightfully dark pro-bono production "Quota", for the Newport Beach Film Festival. For the full list of amazing (and generous) talent, see the closing credits. #brandbuilding #creativitymatters #ideasworthsharing #adsthatshine #ninelivesgroup #marketingagency #storytelling, #creativity I specialize in powerful, breakthrough ideas that build brands and business.

The Invisible Gorilla. You might be wondering why out of nowhere I am writing a post with such a weird title… Well it is the name of a short film. In this film, two teams pass a basketball. One team wears white shirts and the other wears black. Viewers are told to count the number of passes made by the white team and ignore the black team. Sounds simple, right? But here's the surprising part. Halfway through the film, a woman in a gorilla suit walks across the court, thumps her chest, and then leaves. She’s on screen for 9 seconds. Can you guess what’s astonishing about this film? Almost half of the viewers don’t notice the gorilla at all. They are so focused on counting the passes that they miss it entirely. They don’t realize the gorilla was there until they are told about it. This tells us something important about ourselves: Sometimes we are blind to the obvious. We are also blind to our own blindness. In our lives, we often repeat this mistake. We get so busy counting our problems that we miss the opportunities right in front of us. Take a moment today to look around. What are you missing while you’re focused on something else? P.S. Have you heard of this movie before? #Leadership #Opportunities #Focus #Mindset #MondayMotivation

THE ANNE FRANK GIFT SHOP At the intersection of marketing and the Holocaust, lies this short (15 minutes) and thought provoking film by the brilliant Mickey Rapkin. It is streaming on GQ Magazine until December 18th. The link to the article and movie is in the comments. Every line of dialogue packs a punch. His dark humor is so compelling as this creative agency brainstorms how to better market Anne Frank's short life and tragic story to prospective visitors of her house. It raised so many important questions about the human experience. The film grew out of a study about the profound ignorance in young Americans about the Holocaust. Since October 7th, I've had many painful conversations with friends and colleagues about the ongoing events and the marketing and crisis communications surrounding the horrors of the attack on Israel. I've been quiet here for the last month, torn about what to say - but this helped me find my words. We must educate those who don't know or understand history, in a way that connects with them. It is what we as communicators, leaders and marketers do for our work, but this, now, matters so much more. This movie is a case study in meeting your clients and prospects where they are by using stories that resonate and the social media channels that they care about. And if needed, cats. It's like Marvel - watch through the credits. Maybe Israel needs to think about their marketing and communications to the world, not just to our fellow Jews, because our survival depends on it. The hatred here is palpable and scary. Maybe a leader in the agency world can help? Is that a crazy idea to propose? While I am a firm believer in respectful discourse and want peace, this movie simply drove home for me, #neveragainisnow #TheAnneFrankGiftShop #AnneFrank #Education #Israel
Big day over here. My short film, THE ANNE FRANK GIFT SHOP, is now streaming exclusively at GQ.com until December 18th. ‘Tis the season to give thanks, and we have a lot to be thankful for. It’s been a thrill to share THE ANNE FRANK GIFT SHOP with festivals and viewers across the country this year. And an honor to receive the Film Movement Award from the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival and win audience awards in Philadelphia and Santa Barbara. Thank you to Jewish Film Institute for the completion grant that helped get our independent production over the finish line. Our dark comedy asks the question: Is there a wrong way to talk about the Holocaust? I’d argue no. But in the last six weeks, we’ve wondered: is there a wrong time? THE ANNE FRANK GIFT SHOP grew out of a disturbing study that revealed a majority of young Americans could not answer basic questions about the Holocaust. This isn’t ancient history. As I've been saying in Q&As and talkbacks, if Anne Frank was alive today, she’d be three years younger than Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks had a show on Hulu last year. Our film aims to use comedy to disarm viewers. But its message is vital. As one character says: “We have to tell this story again and again and again or it will happen again.” It’s been a blessing to laugh with audiences and to shed some tears together. Thank you to GQ for streaming the film. #foryourconsideration — Best Live Action Short

Think of your life as an intimate behind-the-scenes “Making of” Documentary. You’re familiar with every struggle, every single storyline, all the ups and downs, the pains and joys, all of it. What you know about other people’s lives is, by comparison, a teaser trailer. We have ALL been guilty at one time or another of seeing someone’s teaser trailer and passing judgment on their entire life’s film. I’m not saying we can completely stop this behavior, but it is worth keeping it in mind the next time we start drawing wild conclusions from a teaser trailer.
