Understanding and Addressing Human Trafficking in Behavioral Health Work 12:00pm - January 17, 2024 Hosted By: Southeast MHTTC In the year 2000, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act was passed at the federal level redefining human trafficking in the United States and initiating new efforts to address human trafficking. Since then, many new federal and state laws, policies, funding streams, and projects have been adopted in an effort to create and support a comprehensive system of care to identify and provide short and long term services for children and adults who have experienced human trafficking. Mental health providers are a vital part of that comprehensive system of care. This presentation will provide foundational information on human trafficking pertinent to clinicians, identification and reporting considerations, and resources to support this work. It will also highlight a recent project aimed at integrating policies, practices, and strategies addressing mental and behavioral health and human trafficking. For more info. info@southeastmhttc.org

How do you integrate empathy in your life and your work? In ours - it’s through harm reduction! In this panel discussion at Reimagining Empathy: a Decade of Unity and Resilience on Nov 30th, Liz Evans, Mark Jenkins and I will explore the connection between empathy, harm reduction, and the frontier of hope and healing for people with an addiction. We will discuss how harm reduction strategies and philosophies are not just practical approaches to addressing substance use but are manifestations of empathy in action. The discussion will highlight how these initiatives prioritize the well-being and agency of people who use drugs by providing non-judgmental and non-coercive support and resources. It always amazes me how we go into some things thinking we know how we would ask questions, handle a situation, etc., then we are blown away by what we didn’t know. We have all heard of “trauma-informed” care, but do we really understand all aspects? Would you know how to conduct a Forensic Experiential Trauma Interview (FETI)? Have you ever thought about sensory -related questions and how they can trigger and jog memory? If so, would you know how to ask them? Do we know how the brain functions and stores memories during trauma? Would you know the proper techniques to interview a suspect of sexual abuse? There is always so much to learn. I have worked with trauma victims for years now, and I still have so much to learn. Never assume you would know how to handle a situation. Remain teahable. The lives of others can be negatively impacted in ways we will never know due to our own arrogance.

As a person who has had their liberty removed… this is a traumatic experience. Sure we can ask the police to become more trauma informed when depriving individuals of their liberty. However, it is my opinion that if we ask the police to become more humane in their actions this is the fastest way to systemic change. By asking the police to treat people like they were either their mother-father or brother-sister it is easier than trying to train a work force in trauma informed practices. I believe if we can reduce the instances of traumatic experiences in the justice system it can help people to connect in a humane way. People don’t have criminogenic needs, as humans we have a inherent need to be treated humanely. Our current punitive approach to justice, creates environments that require punishing people who are asking for help, however antisocial it may appear.

Learned about the Common Threads Project over the weekend, and their ground-breaking and leading-edge work. From the website: Common Threads Project is designed to be one component of a holistic approach in which a system of coordinated security, legal, medical, economic, educational and social services are also provided for survivors. We believe that all survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) are entitled to high quality psychological care. Our mission is to ensure that everyone who survives trauma, regardless of circumstance, has access to that care. In order to achieve this mission, we focus on three tasks: We build local capacity through training. Rather than placing cultural “outsiders” in our projects, we train local mental health providers to provide treatment following our methodology. This helps ensure treatment is culturally appropriate, and that the intervention will last beyond our organization’s involvement. We launch scalable interventions. Our projects provide a model of care that can be implemented on a larger scale. Over time, our partner organizations become centers of excellence, providing a model for new projects to follow. We conduct efficacy research. It is our responsibility to ensure that the treatment we help provide is effective in both reducing psychological symptoms and improving mental health. https://lnkd.in/gNQm94AD
