🎉 Our Scout Group is 10 years old 🎉 As a founding member and Group Scout Leader for the last 7 years, I can not understate the benefits #volunteering has on your mental well-being. Of course, there are times when it's the last thing you want to do after a hectic day at work, but overall it plays a really important role in being able to distract you from the challenges life throws at you. Today is National Day of Remembrance of Indigenous Boarding Schools – also known as Orange Shirt Day. 🦋 It is a day to show support for the Indigenous children who were taken from their families, sent to residential schools, and forced to sever the connection to tribal traditions from 1819 to as recent as the 1970s – and for the Indigenous communities still impacted to this day. Countless Indigenous children in both the United States and Canada were put through this traumatic experience, including tribal children right next door to us at the Haskell boarding school in Lawrence. Many of them did not survive this traumatic experience, often malnourished, abused, or lost while trying to escape back to their families. For the past several years, I have been called to Lawrence to honor these souls and clear the energy that remains. I spend time communing with the land, connecting, and remembering the too-young souls who were lost there. I drum and sing for those children that were not allowed to have a voice. I pray for ALL children. Past, present & future. 🧡 As a society, we try so hard to eradicate things that are different. We want to eliminate what we don't understand or what makes us uncomfortable. We've been doing this for such a long time and it's beyond time that we change.
