The SAPS shot dead 393 suspected criminals last year. There have been 37 suspects shot dead in KZN alone, so far this year. Last Wednesday SAPS shot 14 suspected criminals dead in two separate incidents on one day. They recovered a total of 10 guns during the incidents. This means that at least 4 of the 14 were not armed nor threatening the lives of the police who shot them. IPID, the agency tasked with investigating shootings by the police, doesn't have the capacity to investigate this many incidents. Nor should it? According to IPID, on average 1 suspect is killed by them every day. There is very low tolerance for criminals amongst social media commentators on these things; many comments are shocking, it is as though being a criminal means you have given up being human, & you deserve to die a violent death. Yet in South Africa we abandoned the death penalty a long time ago. Even the most heinous criminal would not be put to death if properly arrested, investigated, prosecuted, convicted and sentenced, they would not be put to death. The Minister has many times told the police to 'shoot to kill' - and this has, I believe put them at greater risk of being shot by criminals; they too must be more likely to 'shoot to kill'. We need to decide where we're going with this. I'm amazed how many people claim to trust the SAPS to be police, prosecutors, magistrates and judges, all at once and all in the split second of violent confrontation. I don't. Our judicial system stands between our fine Constitution and a slide into vigilantism. Many people, specially women, say they don't trust the police to deal with integrity with their complaints, that they are as likely to warn the alleged perpetrator as to arrest him. Many police are believed to be open to petty and organised corruption. I find it petrifying that there is not a much greater outcry about their actions; that a father weeping over the body of the son he believes to have been innocent does not attract more empathy. And the silence from most political parties at a moment where 9 killings in one incident (from which 3 guns are recovered) collides with the run up to the election, is deafening. I wonder, is it too difficult to pick a lane, offer an opinion? Is the vote count more important than integrity? Who will defend the Constitution? Or do they think there's nothing of importance to be said about it? Interesting reads: https://lnkd.in/dvaZYrWC and https://lnkd.in/dBeyCzR4 I'd love to know your view.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE | GOVERNANCE | AML/CFT and TRUST AND CORPORATE SERVICES PROVIDERS INT'L STANDARDS EXPERTISE | GLOBAL 200 WOMEN POWER LEADER 2024
🤕 With a bit of down time, I watched an Insider piece in their series “How Crime Works”. 📽 The episode is entitled “How I Trafficked $5 million Worth of Cocaine” on YouTube. The former cocaine smuggler aided cartels in smuggling large amounts of cocaine into the #UK. 💡 In listening to the strategies used, he set out a few things that were done to obscure the kilos, but it was his almost throw away comment on #risk. He said that (paraphrasing lightly) ‘cartels like to minimize their risks’. 😯 THIS! This one statement struck me! Particularly given some of the quiet groans in #trainings from professionals on the topic of applying the risk-based approach in their #complianceframeworks. Here is a ex-criminal setting out #riskmanagement strategies of the cartel he worked closely with, but in delivering past trainings, the need for a solid risk management strategy is not always fully appreciated. 📜 This interview was long, but worth watching to glean the typologies in drug trafficking and how bad actors use corrupt officials, legal loopholes and gaps in border controls to continue and grow their criminal enterprises. Tellingly, the ex-smuggler said that, “you need to know the law to break the law.” Oh, and all the money generated from the large scale drug trafficking? They hired an #accountant to keep track of it all! 👮♂️ In the description to the video, it is stated that, “The National Crime Agency (NCA) estimates the UK cocaine market is worth $13.8 billion (£11 billion) a year. In the year ending March 2023, over 92 metric tons of illegal drugs were seized by police and Border Force, the highest volume since 2003/4.” 🤔 One constant amongst bad actors - criminals are innovators! So much more to be done by #lawenforcement and #complianceprofessionals. I’ll continue to share my #passionforcompliance! #amlcompliance #corruption #compliancetraining The link to the full, uncut interview is below. https://lnkd.in/evCVS-wA

According to the FBI, violent crime consists of four offenses: murder/non-neligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. That’s the #5 issue that voters want the presidential candidates to address. Although there has been buzz that these types of crimes have risen during the present administration, that isn’t accurate. -Across the country (small and large cities), violent crime rates have been decreasing since the end of 2022 -However, murder rates have increased in Seattle, DC, and Memphis -Almost 80% of Americans think the rates have gone up since he previous year though Why? -One reason is media coverage. Nothing sells like a headline that tells people to panic! Some news outlets are invested in getting people to talk more about the negative issues in the country. After all, studies show that people remember negative experiences more so than positive -In some cities, the number of cops has declined. That can be alarming to people when they’ve read/heard that there are fewer police officers on detail. What are the candidates saying about how they’ll address violent crime? Here you go: https://lnkd.in/e9WuXcKn Don’t forget to vote in November! #election2024 #getthefacts #beaneducatedvoter

What Happens When the Police Seize Money, Drugs, or Cars via LawInfo: https://bit.ly/3QsvIpY. “When police raid a building (after obtaining a search warrant), they will usually take items that they think are related to any potential criminal charges. In addition to a search warrant, there are generally three other times when the police can seize a person’s personal property. This includes: - “Incident to arrest” (found while arresting someone) - By consent - With a seizure order - Common items seized include things like “drug money,” vehicles, homes or other real estate, firearms, drug paraphernalia, and other property, including anything purchased with so-called “dirty money.” READ MORE HERE: https://bit.ly/3QsvIpY Contact us today for your free consultation. To our colleagues... FYI: An outline of the potential dangers REALTORS face on the job and some practical safety dos and don'ts that could help prevent an assault are included. The campaign is a concerted effort by the National Association of REALTORS, CREA and your provincial association to develop safety awareness among all REALTORS. Checklist There are a number of basic things you can do to protect your personal safety. Keep a cell phone at your side Your cell phone can be your best friend in a bad situation. Program 911 on your speed dial. Have a distress code Have a prearranged distress signal: For example, "I'm at the Jones house and I need the red file right away." Share and practice your distress code with your office, colleagues, family and friends. Use it any time you feel uneasy. Make sure your office knows Tell someone who you are with, where you are going and when youll be back. Make sure someone else knows what your schedule is, and who you're planning to meet. Don't glamorize promotional material Avoid glamour shots. Your marketing materials should be polished and professional. Limit the amount of personal information you share. Do not use your home phone number; use a cell phone number instead. Use your office address, rather than your home address. Know who you are dealing with When you have new clients, meet them at the office first. Verify their identities. Get their car make and licence number and if you can, photocopy their driver's licence. Complete a Client I.D. Form. A serious client will not hesitate to share this information. Take precautions at Open Houses Often at an Open House, you'll be working alone. You won't know who will show up, so take basic precautions to ensure your personal safety. Stay safe. Ferdinand P. As a runner, a father and as a human being, this one hits home. Most people probably don’t realize this,, but in America, the #medium prison sentence for violent criminals is #Zero years behind bars….and it’s almost #ZERO years even for murderers here in Pittsburgh. Why? Because the majority of violent criminals are never held accountable for their crimes. In Pittsburgh, for example, you have almost a 50/50 chance of literally getting away with murder. (Look up the case clearance rate for violent crimes). It’s time for reform. Judges who recklessly release violent criminals back on the streets need to be replaced. Resources need to be directed to help Detectives clear murder and other violent crimes…. And witnesses need to feel safe that their testimony won’t result in retaliation by criminals who serve little to no real time in prison for seriously violent crimes. Are we left to need guns in our waist bands as we run in our county parks? Get real. If a law enforcement officer isn’t safe in a park, how are we suppose to be? Oh… and for those of you who would dismiss concerns about violent crimes, know this: If Pittsburgh were a nation, in 2022, it would have been the 22nd most deadly nation on the planet based upon our murder rate. (Ranked just behind Columbia)
