You can’t always win. But you can always deserve to…
Strange night last night at White Hart Lane, home of the (sometimes) mighty Spurs, who faced off against reigning champions Manchester City. The stakes were high; Spurs needed a win to keep their Champions League hopes alive, while City aimed to take a giant leap in securing their fourth consecutive title.
Crucially, if Spurs won, it would also hand their arch rivals Arsenal the upper hand in the title race.
In the midst of all this, some Spurs fans entertained the notion of Spurs throwing the game to thwart their rivals' title aspirations. But not me. I believe in the power of deserving victory, not in hoping for others to fail.
Take Arsenal, for example. Despite facing off against state owned football giants with seemingly limitless resources, they've fought tooth and nail to close the gap in recent years and challenge for the title. While they may fall short this season, they can hold their heads high, knowing they deserved to win.
As for Spurs last night, I would argue they deserved to win too. Despite some sections of the crowd clearly relishing City’s goals, the players didn’t get drawn into all that nonsense. They wanted to win. They fought the good fight, and deserved to win.
But it's not just about the players and fans, it's about the leaders too. Spurs' manager, Ange, exemplified integrity and a winner's mindset, expressing his disappointment in fans who prioritised thwarting their rivals over supporting their team. Ange deserved to win.
You can’t always win. That’s life. But you can always deserve to. That’s a mindset and a decision.
Deserve to win. Onwards!
