Roof gardens on new developments are becoming a must-have. Now, these amenity spaces are becoming more sophisticated, with places to socialise, extensive planting and even outdoor cooking. Where greenery is appropriate, designers occasionally look to specify larger plants, mostly this is small trees which can add an interesting dimension to a space, invite wildlife and reduce pollutants in the air. The main challenge here is the requirement for increased soil depth to accommodate large root formations. It turns out there's a science to landscaping... Creating a beautiful yard isn't just about throwing some plants together; it's about understanding the elements that make up a truly stunning outdoor space. Elements like balance, scale, variety, color, and texture. I was working with a homeowner recently to boost the look of their yard prior to listing, which the yard really needed a makeover to let their gorgeous home shine. Working with a local landscape specialist, we gave him the reins to transform our seller’s tired landscaping into a Texas dreamscape. Our landscape expert took time to explain that the new homeowners would appreciate a low maintenance, drought tolerant garden that included native plants. The results were incredible! The result? Good to see Luminaires entering the market that don't have to follow the typical and now expected functional 'same all' format route to be a cost effective solution. Hopefully an indicator for potential things to come. Surely you shouldn't be punished and have to spend and utilise large amounts of your budgets just to be different and try to add some character into your street lighting? Yes there will be scenarios where higher end products will be required for your specific heritage/contemporary scheme but we should also have options to be more creative with main stream competitively priced 'attractive' options. Even more so in the modern era where we don't need to regularly access the internals for lamp changes etc. so you can forgo the easy access options to save on costs (in fact it is a benefit to avoid opening the lantern - the amount of times a lantern failure in the past has been due to incorrect sealing after a maintenance site visit!) and it can be a fit and let run scenario.
