Yesterday, Senators Scott and Schatz (D-HI) led six of their Senate colleagues, Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), and Angus King (I-Maine), in reintroducing the Telehealth Modernization Act. This bill updates coverage restrictions to allow for increased access to life-saving telehealth services. It’s a common misconception that emergency medicine is new to telemedicine. In fact, we have a long history of #telehealth in the acute care space. The triaging of acute care complaints from the home is similar to any acute care telemedicine, this is simply building on that to see potentially more higher risk cases. The examples of programs in this article are models we outlined in an ACEP taskforce report. There are a ton of different ways to do virtual care in EM as evidenced at this center, our pilots at Jefferson, and a whole lot of other places. But yah, this isn’t new from the EM side- we have a bunch of research on this already! This is how and why at the American College of Emergency Physicians we pushed for more of a voice at the national level. Potentially, getting pharmacists into this is a newer space. I’d be interested to see how this can be used for medication adherence etc. ED pharmacists are a vital part of the team and yet not doing as much virtually.
