Our latest blog introduces a path forward for quantitative biodiversity credits. “Framing benefit in terms of resilience to disturbance and communication between the parts of an ecosystem enables us to quantify the impact of biodiversity gain and loss.” https://lnkd.in/gwsmgHt6 Find out how Living Carbon learns from a rich history of interconnected ecological networks and envisions the future regeneration of degraded landscapes! #biodiversity #functionalconnectivity #keystonemutulalists #carbondrawdown

The rise of Nature Markets: "England is launching a biodiversity credit scheme this week that attempts to force all new road and housebuilding projects to benefit nature, rather than damage it. The “nature market”, called biodiversity net gain (BNG), means all new building projects must achieve a 10% net gain in biodiversity or habitat. If a woodland is destroyed by a road, for example, another needs to be recreated. This can happen either on site or elsewhere. The requirement becomes law under the Town and Country Planning Act on 12 February for larger sites, and on 2 April 2024 for smaller sites."

It's challenging to quantify biodiversity. It's vast, encompassing everything from visible large mammals and trees to smaller organisms like insects, pollinators, and plants such as mosses, lichens, and mycorrhizal fungi. Understanding their roles can be complex at first glance. Yet, in today's economy, measuring biodiversity is essential to assess losses and take action. February 12th marks the implementation of a one such legislation in England: Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). Under this law, every new development project must achieve a 10% net gain in biodiversity. For instance, if forest land is converted into a commercial complex, developers must ensure a 10% net gain in biodiversity to compensate for the loss. However, the primary focus should be on avoiding such diversions altogether, as biodiversity conservation and habitat creation are long-term processes. BNG holds promise in mitigating biodiversity loss, although challenges such as the extent of its effectiveness and potential conflicts between ecologists and developers remain, especially when both will need to work together in collaboration. Nevertheless, it's encouraging to see scientific research influencing policy decisions. In a world grappling with biodiversity loss and climate change, both interconnected challenges, dialogue and monitoring of legislation like BNG are crucial. As this legislation involves measuring biodiversity and ensuring gains, it serves as an intriguing pilot project with the potential to guide future initiatives. #Biodiversity #Conservation #environmentalpolicy #ClimateAction #Sustainability #BiodiversityNetGain #WildlifeConservation #EcosystemServices #NatureProtection

This article is based on Ramboll’s article by Kristin Halpin aimed to highlight the release of Americas Biodiversity Metric 1.0 to assist businesses & organisations in achieving their sustainability objectives, which include no net loss of biodiversity, net gain of biodiversity, and transitioning to a more nature-positive state 🍃 The metric includes more than 500 different types of habitat. Approximately 85,000 species live in these areas, 14,000 of which are uncommon, endangered, or threatened and is applicable to: 𝟭. 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮. 𝟮. Reports are showing a 69% decrease in global wildlife populations since 1970. Reductions in biodiversity have cascading effects when left unchecked. Understanding the importance of biodiversity and taking action to protect it can make a real difference. This article does a great job at explaining the benefits of biodiversity to both the environment and how companies that embrace biodiversity may have unique opportunities available to them. https://lnkd.in/gCpncH_H #biodiversity #climatechange #sustainability

dammit.... we missed the opportunity to do a gushing post for World Biodiversity Day yesterday :/ while we wait another 364 days for the next opportunity, we did get a mention in Carbon Pulse yesterday for our biodiversity credits event, where Zoological Society of London (ZSL)'s James Pilkington discussed key challenges and lessons learned from the rhino bond that could be applied to biodiversity credits. it also features BeZero Carbon's Nick Atkinson's point during the panel discussion that rather than trying to quantify and track biodiversity in all its complexity and given we know the capacity for ecosystems to recover, it may be simpler to focus on measuring landscape pressures instead. https://lnkd.in/dZpv9Psy
