Early Career Pharmacist of the Year Victoria | Promoting and supporting rural pharmacy | Advocating for pharmacists | Encouraging positive workplace cultures
👩🏻⚕️ The Australian Journal of Pharmacy recently featured some of my comments about the rural pharmacy workforce.
👩🏻⚕️ Thank you to the AJP for spreading awareness about the issue of staffing in our rural pharmacies.
🤝🏼 Our metropolitan services could help and support our rural pharmacy services by helping fill roles in their pharmacies and departments...Here’s some ideas:
💡 Our metropolitan and rural services could participate in a pharmacist exchange program. Such a program may allow for upskilling, exposure to other health conditions and medication management, and increased awareness for both the metropolitan and rural pharmacists.
💡 Alternatively, perhaps as part of employment in the metropolitan areas, pharmacists are rotated through a rural stint. I understand there is a similar system in NSW.
💡 For the longevity of rural pharmacy – rural community and hospital pharmacy placements should be mandated as part of the pharmacy courses. If we are not sending pharmacy students for rural experiences, how can we expect them to consider it as a career option? Our entire future rural pharmacy workforce in Victoria cannot be expected to be filled by our regional pharmacy school that now only has ~15 graduates per year.
👩🏻⚕️ A gap of 2 equivalent full time (ETF or FTE) in a team may not seem like much – but in a rural pharmacy team of 8 EFT, it is a 25% gap in their department…
If there was a 25% EFT gap in our metropolitan counterparts, for example 25 EFT from a department of 100 EFT or 75 EFT from a department of 300 EFT(!) ...there’d be some serious action.

I'm excited to announce the release of an online course for utilizing pharmacists for primary care with X = Primary Care!
---
A few months ago I shared that I was speaking to the XPC group about the potential #pharmacists have in supporting primary care.
The feedback and interest I received from the group was very positive. So positive that there were attendees looking to hire a pharmacist for their primary care practice.
As a result, Paulius Mui, MD asked if we could build an online course (link in the comments to the announcement and course enrollment) with a more comprehensive view on what pharmacists can do and the value they bring.
The intended audience is primarily those working in primary care/clinics that aren't already aware of the potential of pharmacists to contribute to the practice, but it's also a great dive into #pharmacy in general that may be helpful for non-clinicians in #HealthTech.
---
The course is 10 sessions of ~10 minutes each that highlights the capabilities of pharmacists to supercharge #PrimaryCare teams through improved care operations, increased revenue, and better patient outcomes.
Session 1: Opportunities in Primary Care
Session 2: Pharmacist Education and Training
Session 3: Optimizing Therapy
Session 4: Clinical Superpowers
Session 5: Pharmacist Care Operations
Session 6: Metrics and Outcomes
Session 7: Paying Pharmacists
Session 8: Pharmacist Scope of Practice
Session 9: Legislative Landscape for Pharmacists
Session 10: Integrating Pharmacists
---
Please check out the course and see if it could be valuable for your work.
All proceeds go to XPC and the work they're doing promoting the value of primary care.

GP Clinical pharmacists - what a success story!
🥅 The ambition was, by 2024 that there would be 7000 GP clinical pharmacists. 😅 And by the end of 2023, that count was 6600, so, we've definitely smashed that target. 💪 And not only have we proven ourselves as a workforce, but, by 2026, all pharmacy graduates will be prescribers and our profession will further flourish and grow. 💐 🌷 🌹
Listen to this recording where Tiba Rao, Anthony Ajvinder Singh Digpal and I discuss our thoughts and opinions on this topic, we explain the role of general practice pharmacists and I take you through my journey from community pharmacist to GP partner.

### The Overlooked Role of Clinical Pharmacists: A Call for PCI Reform
In India, the potential of Pharm D graduates is being underutilized due to the Pharmacy Council of India's (PCI) lack of understanding and advocacy for clinical pharmacists. Unlike, Pharm D graduates are trained specifically for direct patient care, yet the PCI treats all pharmacy qualifications as equivalent. This oversight limits the career prospects of Pharm D graduates and deprives the healthcare system of their specialized skills.
The PCI's focus on opening more pharmacy colleges, rather than ensuring the quality and relevance of the education, has led to an oversupply of graduates who struggle to find meaningful roles. This situation risks reducing pharmacists to mere dispensers of medications, rather than recognizing them as essential healthcare providers.
To address this, the PCI must acknowledge the unique contributions of clinical pharmacists and create pathways for their proper integration into the healthcare system. By doing so, the PCI can ensure that Pharm D graduates are utilized to their fullest potential, ultimately enhancing the quality of healthcare in India.
