Executive Strategist@ CrowdStrike | Proactive Cloud-Based Security Solutions, Veteran helping Veterans
Two Years And Counting - lessons learned from my two years out of uniform I struggled to decide what I should put in here, how my message would be interpreted and what I would have to leave off because, well, we all have shorter attention spans. That being said... - Find your passion. I found mine; helping others. I am not perfect, but I learn something everyday that I can use to impact the next. - Our value is not in the uniform we wear or the title we hold, but in the impact you have on the desired outcome and willingness to continue growing. I don't miss the US Army--I had my time--but I value the experiences and relationships it provided and its impact on my contributions to the mission. - You will never get back the time you lost. I cherish every moment that my wife, kids and I spend together. And I have had more of that in the past two years than EVER before. They sacrificed without volunteering and I am doing my best to make up for that. Luckily, they were not "the Army" and when we left, they lost nothing. Encourage YOUR family to have their own identity. - The team you join is extremely important. I made some very strategic decisions in joining CrowdStrike and the #team created by James Yeager and Tina Thorstenson. One of the pitfalls I have seen from #transitioningservicemembers is their loss of that team, group and connection. I did not. We are a motley group of recovering #CISOs and #CIOs who have the scars to prove it but the humility to acknowledge we are #strongertogether. - Work / Life balance is not balance, it's a choice. I chose my career when I could have been doing other things because I valued my importance more than I should. I learned that late in my #army career. This company emphasizes the family and, as long as I produce, doesn't care where I get the job done--even at a soccer field. - Relationships matter. Again, one I learned late in my career. Get involved. I am working to get better at this and devote time, each week, engaging with servicemembers who are curious as to my experiences and path. All paths are different, but we owe it to give back. I am happy to do that with AFCEA International, American Corporate Partners (ACP), and The ETS Sponsorship Program. - Never undervalue your worth just because you have no "experience." You do. I worked with a young officer who turned down a job at CrowdStrike because he didn't think he could provide value on day one; "they are all so much better than me." Your experience is what will make everyone better--it doesn't matter if you aren't a ninja coder or can navigate Salesforce like a seasoned professional. You have seen and done things that less that 1% of America ever has--and they need that. I love where I am. I enjoy my #team and the positive impact we can make on individuals, companies and governments everyday. Drex DeFordTodd Felker,Matt Singleton Victoriano C. To those thinking about leaving the military, please take a second to read Kristen McGachey's article. Some poignant quotes: "if anything, financial services is competing with defence for talent" "Military people underestimate their skills...they fall into the trap of thinking 'I don't understand finance. I don't understand the economy...How can i fit in there?'" "It's such a weird mindset to have that people who come out of the armed services can't do anything else.......I would argue that we're probably the most flexible out there" Like many finance firms, we at Wellington Management have an active veterans' network that looks to assist those transitioning into civilian life. It's a scary old world out there, but there is a whole network of Diversity Project - Investment Industry organisations that are there to help you. So, if you're a vet looking to transition into the finance industry, 'crack on and get the job done' (after all, you have experience and skills that our industry needs).
In my latest story for Financial News, I speak to former members of the armed forces who have made the jump into finance and forged a new career in the City. Firms in the Square Mile are increasingly hunting for new recruits among the 18,000 people who exit the British military each year and have launched a variety of schemes, work placements and internships to help veterans of all ranks move into finance. From a DEI perspective, this helps finance firms attract a wider pool of talent, but also gives them access to individuals with desirable skills, such as remaining calm under pressure and a willingness to get stuck in. Many thanks to Northern Trust's Kelly Mullane, Wellington Management's James Bradbury, Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management (UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man)'s Sean Taylor FRSA, BlackRock's Osric Richards and St. James’s Place's Matt Corke for sharing their stories with me. https://lnkd.in/eA6Q6Yje

**The Deep End** One week into my corporate fellowship at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and it feels like I'm at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean looking up. But isn't that the point of diving into new depths? Transitioning from military service to industry isn't just about changing uniforms or titles; it's about embracing the vast, often intimidating ocean of opportunities and challenges head-on. This fellowship is my deep dive — tough in the best ways, pushing me to grow beyond my limits and learn from the elite. To my fellow service members in the transitioning space: keep going. Dive into the deep end. Do hard things. Surround yourself with the best and learn. The growth, the struggle, it’s all part of the process. It's how we forge new paths in unfamiliar territories. I'm here, learning from an elite team at JPMC, and if I can do it, you can too. #TeamBlackTransition #transitioningmilitary #growthmindset #jpmorganchase #challengeaccepted

Our team was honored to have the chance to speak with top military talent about career opportunities with Symbotic at the Service Academy Career Conference (SACC) job fair. #veterans #symboticcareers #technology #software #robotics #engineering #automation #operations #innovation #supplychain #reinventthewarehouse #reimaginethesupplychain
Amazing experience at the Symbotic booth for the Sevice Academy Career Conference (SACC) 2023 in San Diego, CA. It was a pleasure speaking to fellow veterans and service members on how their military experience, skills & expertise translate into our industry and how they could join us in continuing to reimagine the warehouse & reinvent the supply chain.

As a former apprentice, I can attest to the validity and worth of this opportunity. Even if your cyber knowledge is limited as mine was, an apprenticeship is a great way to learn and develop.
All, we are opening a new apprenticeship position in my team. Our apprentices rotate through all areas under me from Offensive Security to Incident Response, but they also have the freedom and support to venture out wider into Risk, BISO or other areas of the business they may be interested in. If you know anyone who wants to get into cybersecurity, feel free to share the link below! We put a lot of effort into guiding our apprentices through the various areas so that they can find out what they love to do, and then get them trained up in that area. https://lnkd.in/dpV_TxyA
