Have you ever been to a summer festival where one food truck is always busy? It has long queues all day and outsells everyone else?
That's because they are doing something different.
They do 1 thing incredibly well.
Woodfire pizza.
One size.
Three choices.
Kids.
Adults.
Vegan.
Done.
They know their audience.
They know where they are selling.
Other food trucks serve great food, but there is too much choice.
Other food trucks do one thing, but the quality, service, and vibe aren't as good.
Their queues are shorter because word of mouth isn't buzzing.
Do one thing; do it well.
Consider this and be like the wood-fired pizza food truck when you speak at your next event.
Most speakers use a conference talk to share a list of tips.
4 / 6 / 8 / 12 - I know, I used to do the same.
Stop.
Don't do this.
Tell one story of a moment in your success/career when, against the odds, you won.
This is what people want.
This is what they will remember.
This is the wood fire pizza.
When your talk is sharing a list of tips your audience feels like they are staring at the menu board of a food truck with too many choices.
Too many choices / too much information means they remember nothing.
Plus it's not what they came to the conference for.
A conference is a full-on day.
Lots to do and see.
Which talk to attend?
What to miss?
Got to get the quality networking in.
If you give a 20-minute talk and the event is 6 hours, your talk is less than 6% of the time.
Plus, there are generally simultaneous talks in different rooms.
So your 6% competes with other professionals' 6%.
Just like a festival, the audience needs to choose which band they watch - which food truck they buy from.
And which they don't.
Keep it simple.
Tell that story you have lived.
Avoid educating and explaining.
GPTS and blogs do that.
Inspire and motivate.
