Following the liquidation of Botswana's copper giant, BCL mine back in 2016, and closure of several other mines, copper is on the rise once again due transition to cleaner sources of energy.
According to the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Lefoko Moagi, Climate change action and the energy transition have led to an increased global appetite for copper. He noted that copper is a key component of electric vehicles (EVs) as they utilise double the copper as compared to gasoline powered cars. He also went on that copper is essential for power grids and wind turbines for renewable energy.
“As it has been said, the road to reaching net zero begins and ends with copper. All infrastructure built to support renewable energy uses large amounts of copper,” said Moagi.
In December 2023, Moagi approved the acquisition of Khoemacau by MMG, the transaction which was valued at P23 Billion. Moagi said following a competitive bidding process that resulted in MMG Limited purchasing the Khoemacau mine from Cupric Canyon LP (Cupric), the new owners have committed to expanding the current operations.
“The Mine produces about 60,000 tons of copper and about 2 million ounces of silver annually. Future expansion plans of the Mine include increasing output to circa 130,000 tons of copper and 5 million ounces of silver per year with additional investments. Expansion costs to achieve this have been reported at between USD700 million over the period to 2026.”
