Our water and wastewater summer interns, alongside several team members, recently participated in WEAT SE’s SIP – Summer Intern Program, where they toured the newly constructed City of Pearland Surface Water Treatment Plant! 🌊 This state-of-the-art 10 MGD ultrafiltration facility provided our team with hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of water quality analysis, advanced treatment steps, and daily operations. This visit aligns with the City of Pearland’s efforts to reduce groundwater reliance and champion sustainable water management practices. We're happy to support and engage in programs like SIP that educate and inspire the next generation of water professionals. 🌟 #WaterManagement #SustainablePractices

🌟 Midway Through the Journey: Celebrating Internship Progress at MTIF🌟 Today, we continue to share updates on how our Graduate Interns are progressing in their roles. In this post, we’re excited to share an update on Jade Gregory’s journey as she reaches the halfway mark of her internship at MTIF. Jade has shown great enthusiasm get involved in Lab activities, and scientific research. 🔬 Week 1: Orientation and Initial Training • After Health and Safety and Lab inductions, Jade quickly involved herself with microbial research using a variety of drugs to assess their inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations on different salmonella strains. She has also assisted ongoing commercial projects. 📝 Week 2: Initial Tasks and Lab Maintenance • Jade participated in the creation of multiple assays, assisted the lab in its regular day-to-day maintenance, and got to experience the procedures required to work in a highly maintained clean room. 👩🔬 Week 3: Conducting Experiments • Jade applied her training and worked with more potent solutions. This work required a steady hand, and safe handling of both the bacteria and oils required to undergo the protocol. At this point, she was primarily working independently, making her own broths and agars to use in her experiments. Jade has shared a quote summarising her experience so far: “The hands-on experience working in this microbiology lab has made me feel even more certain of my scientific career path.” NTU Business and Employers Nottingham Trent University NTU Employability #MTIF #InternshipExperience #GraduateInterns #Marketing #Innovation #Employability

The #nonetloss Wikipedia article I created during my internship with ICCS can be found on English Wikipedia's main page today: https://lnkd.in/dpQ_8Jj7 ! 🌐 🌄 In recent years, no net loss (NNL) policies have been adopted by an increasing number of countries across the globe. According to a 2018 paper by Bull and Strange, the number stands at least 69 countries. Ensuring that the global extent of this #biodiversity policy and its expansion beyond its US wetland origins in the 1970s was represented on Wikipedia therefore became an important goal for my internship. 🌍 📈 This motivated me to create the article as a global overview of NNL policy with examples from across 5 continents, while renaming the existing article on the origins of NNL policy in the US wetland context and its subsequent development there from 'No net loss wetlands policy' to 'No net loss policy in the United States'. By creating the article, I was able to gain a lot of insight into NNL policy, but also to learn about its relationship with approaches like #netpositiveimpact and #netgain! You can read the article here: https://lnkd.in/dVE7G6yd 🌐 🦆

Continuing our "STEM Women" series, today we're featuring Lindsay Hall, Environmental Engineer for our Division of Waste and Hazardous Substances. Lindsay is a member of the Remediation Section. Lindsay oversees regulatory aspects of investigations and takes remedial actions on properties with potential or confirmed hazardous substance releases. This involves fieldwork, collecting environmental samples, and evaluating lab data to assess risks to human health and the environment. She also reviews consultants' reports, develops remedial action plans, and ensures successful implementation to mitigate exposures. Why did you choose this field? "I enjoy the challenge of the practical with diverse technical and logistical problem solving. I love that each site is different and presents its own set of nuanced challenges about which to think critically and work through." Biggest piece of advice: "Take advantage of internship or job shadowing opportunities." https://lnkd.in/eNk_X7gy
