The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth is inviting applications from organisations who work with young people to apply for funding under Youth Services Grant Scheme (YSGS). A total of up to €1.25million is being made available in grants to first-time applicants to the YSGS, with the term of the grant running from October 2024 to December 2025. Applications are invited from organisations which currently provide supports, clubs or activities to young people which support their social and personal development. Organisations must have a wide geographic coverage, providing services in at least three Education and Training Board areas. In addition, organisations that do not provide clubs or activities, but which do add significant value to the wider youth sector by supporting the work of other youth organisations, may also apply for funding under the scheme. Adult and community education is vital for the social inclusion and wellbeing of women. In our submission to the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth National Women and Girls Strategy Consultation, our key asks include: 1️⃣ Give equal value to adult and community education so that it gets the support and resources necessary to help women from all backgrounds. 2️⃣ Ensure budgets and policies consider gender so that funding and resources help women, especially those most at risk of marginalisation. 3️⃣ Encourage collaboration between government departments to remove obstacles for women in adult education and make sure our efforts match the goals for inclusive education. Domain three of our Building strong trusts assurance framework explores inclusion within trusts in more detail. It provides a set of questions your trust can use as a diagnostic tool to identify strengths and challenges, to help build a stronger trust. Questions in element two of this domain include: - Does the trust operate fair access? - Does it welcome and effectively teach disadvantaged children and children with SEND from their local areas? Senior Research & Policy Manager at Children's Rights Alliance | Chair at Kids' Own | Policy | Research | Philanthropy |
💡Today the Children's Rights Alliance published #ReportCard2024 the fourth examination of government commitments to children & young people under the PfG Our Shared Future. ✅ There was good progress on a number of key child poverty initiatives along with sustained investment in #EarlyYears. 📚 School Books received an 'A-' grade in recognition of the further expansion of this initiative to students in junior cycle of second-level education. It is important that provision is now expanded to those in senior cycle. 🥘 #FoodPoverty receives a 'B' grade up from last year's 'C+'. It is good to see hot school meals reaching more children however, action is needed to expand or initiate provision to tackle 'holiday hunger' which could use current community infrastructure. 👶 #EarlyYears Reform is awarded an 'A-' grade. The realisation of the goal to invest €1bn 5 years ahead of schedule is indicative of the commitment to change in this area. The finalisation and funding of the new Equal Participation Model is key in order to tackle disadvantage. 🚼 The establishment of a new Childcare Agency is awarded a 'C' grade - the same grade as last year. This reflects the slow progress to setting up the entity and the likelihood this will not be achieved within the lifetime of this government. ❌ At the other end of the grading table, the report highlights that there is much to be done for a number of cohorts of particularly vulnerable children. This includes children living in emergency accommodation, and Direct Provision. 🏚 Family #homelessness receives a 'D-' grade with a record number of children living in Emergency Accommodation. A key driver of the increased numbers living in such accommodation is the lack of exit options. Further investment in prevention serv & child support workers is needed. 🏘 The commitment to end #DirectProvision receives a 'D' grade with a deterioration in standards for children & young people seeking asylum with many being placed in emergency accommodation. The International Protection Child Payment should be introduced urgently. 🏥 #MentalHealth receives the only 'E' grade in this year's report card. While there was a decrease in the number of children admitted to adult psychiatric units almost 4,000 are waiting for a service from CAMHS. 🌟 Bridging Gaps Through Awareness: AICTE Points Activity 🌟 I recently had the opportunity to engage in an insightful AICTE activity focused on Explaining Schemes for Rural Communities and the Transgender Community. The session highlighted several key government initiatives aimed at empowering these groups by providing access to essential resources, education, and economic opportunities. Key takeaways: 🌾 Rural Development Schemes: Programs designed to improve infrastructure, provide better access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities in rural areas. 🏳️🌈 Support for the Transgender Community: Comprehensive schemes offering educational scholarships, job opportunities, and social welfare measures to ensure dignity and inclusion for transgender individuals. 🤝 Inclusivity and Empowerment: Emphasis on creating a society where both rural populations and the transgender community have equal access to growth and development opportunities. This experience underscored the importance of spreading awareness about these schemes to ensure that the benefits reach those who need them most. Together, we can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable future. #AICTE #RuralDevelopment #TransgenderRights #Inclusivity #Empowerment #EqualOpportunities #SocialWelfare #EducationForAll #CommunityDevelopment

As justification for pushing forward with the Government's approach to Youth Crime, the Prime Minister has repeatedly claimed that we have tried the approach advocated for by experts in Youth Development, Child Psychology and Children's Rights. Now of course he goes on to claim that (despite an overall reduction in youth crime over the last decade) taking an evidence based approach has failed. This is despite evidence that the system works for the majority of our children, with a small group needing more support to be successful. I explore this further in my latest below... #YouthJustice #YouthCrime #YouthWork #EndYouthHomelessness #Poverty #LoveIsTheWay

Help! Calling my colleagues from the field of inclusion and advocacy. How are we dealing with problematic labelling such as ‘special educational needs’? As a disabled woman of colour I continue to be determined in unlearning the ableism I have been conditioned with throughout my life. As a professional within the disability and inclusion field I am working at ensuring my content and delivery does not perpetuate ideology that my community have highlighted as harmful. And yet….. I am really struggling to communicate without using these established terms when it comes to formal communication in bid writing for example, cooperate spaces, educational establishments, local authorities etc. Similar to the BAME label. Despite much protest and dialogue explaining how problematic the term is and it’s lack of representation, there hasn’t been an alternative provided and many organisations continue to use it. So, my question is, how do we move away from terms like ‘special educational needs’ and ‘BAME’ still ensure people know what we are talking about? Especially in spaces where this work is very new and the concept of inclusion is emerging. #inclusion #ableism #labeling #ProfessionalDevelopment
