Pressure is growing for hyperscaler providers to end anti-competition practices. Last week, the VP of Google Cloud added to criticism of Microsoft's attempts to create a monopoly, and as he put it, a "whole walled garden" where customers are entirely reliant on Microsoft tech. The CMA's promise of action gave me hope that we'd see more than just angry reactions in 2024. But so far, this hasn't been the case. I want to see definitive action from the hyperscalers that encourages a fair, equitable and open cloud. Step 1 is removing egress fees and using restrictive and anticompetitive licenses that prevent customers from moving freely between providers. Civo is leading the charge and demonstrating how providers can put customers and innovation first and not hinder them through escalating costs and vendor lock-in. Microsoft is getting hit with another antitrust action in the UK, this time coming from Google. As cloud solutions become more savvy, you would think users would have more freedom when choosing and committing to a product or company. That’s not the case. Hyperscalers like Microsoft Azure and AWS have faced mounting scrutiny over their de facto cloud monopolies as well as their unfair practices that lock customers into binding contracts. Hyperscalers have amassed significant market share, giving them power over market terms and pricing norms. With more cloud customers using hyperscaler services, hyperscalers are able to implement unfair pricing structures, which help them "lock in" customers without the appearance of unfair practice. With Wasabi, our future looks different. We believe in a best-of-breed future when it comes to the cloud. Users can and should take advantage of the plethora of cloud options. The dream is not necessarily to knock hyperscalers out of the market completely but to open the floor for specialty providers so that innovation and expertise can flourish. This way, customers benefit as well. With a multi-cloud strategy, customers can use multiple vendors to best serve their needs, but current lock-in practices like egress fees prevent customers from being able to take advantage. Many specialty providers are finding great success, with customers already taking advantage of the multi-cloud option. Whichever way this antitrust activity concludes, it’s clear that the hyperscalers’ influence over the cloud market will be subject to much greater scrutiny going forward. #Hyperscalers #Antitrust #CloudStoragehttps https://lnkd.in/gwDD_3Ks

The cloud is changing the way we do business. It is giving us access to vast amounts of data and computing resources that we never had before. This is a great thing, but it also comes with some risks. One of the biggest risks is that the cloud is becoming increasingly dominated by hyperscalers (GCP, AWS and Azure). These giants are in a position to control the flow of data and AI innovation, which could give them an unfair advantage over their competitors. That's why it's so important for businesses to have a choice when it comes to cloud computing. They need to be able to choose a cloud provider that is aligned with their business goals and that will not compete with them. Akamai is a good example of an open cloud provider. We offer our customers technical and financial flexibility, and we never compete with their business. We believe that the cloud should be a platform for businesses to grow and innovate, not a tool to dominate other companies. #AkamaiCloud #OpenCloud

Very interesting view from our CEO and founder David Friend on vendor (cloud providers) “lock in” to customers and how a multi cloud strategy with Wasabi Technologies can help them avoid it.

This article by Anirban Ghoshal shares part of my view on Google removing egress fees. It is a response to the EU Data Act. I’d add that by going first, Google has the first shot at defining how other hyperscalers will need to define their egress. Any offer that sounds less “free” than Google becomes marketing fodder. And the other aspect that didn’t get mentioned is what cloud platforms need to offer going forward to retain clients now that we have free egress. This reminds me of the early days of Local Number Portability when we were able to take our numbers to any carrier and eventually any device. Now that data isn’t financially captive to any vendor, it becomes more important to support inter cloud communications and services. Who will lead the way? This article also stars Maribel Lopez and Futurum’s Steven Dickens. Enjoy!

⚠️ Shots fired by Google Cloud. 🌩️ A senior executive has heavily criticized Microsoft’s cloud computing practices amid claims that the tech giant is pursuing a monopoly in the industry that could harm long-term competition. 💬 Google Cloud VP Amit Zavery said the company has serious concerns over Microsoft’s current trajectory in the cloud computing industry, warning that it could be seeking to establish a stranglehold in the space akin to that it held in software. ❌ The criticism marks the latest in a long-running spat between Microsoft and competitors in the cloud computing industry amid heightened regulatory scrutiny over its practices. #GoogleCloud | #Microsoft | #CloudComputing
