After 20+ years scaling decarbonisation technologies I’ve developed a thick skin. I got used to be on the receiving end of statements such as: “Not in my backyard”, “This is not what Government does” and my all-time favorite: “EVs are small, slow and expensive”. After a while, you learn to keep your head down, stop listening and continue walking. However, every now and then -if you are persistent enough- a glitch in the matrix opens a door, someone listens, and massive progress takes place... Yesterday I visited TGE’s Bungarribee depot in Sydney. This world-class parcel freight facility -the largest in Australia- sorts up to 32,000 packages per hour. The highly automated 80,000 sqm facility is a beacon of hope towards decarbonising everything. Not only their current operations are Net Zero thanks to a massive solar array on the roof, but they are about to decarbonise their truck fleet. Plus, I got to catch up with some amazing people as well. Met old friends and made new ones Heather Bone, Julia Hinwood, Charlotte Twigg. What else could I ask for a Tuesday? TGE is well on track to become a Net Zero logistics supplier which is good news to anyone concerned with Scope 3 emissions. A reporting company’s scope 3 emissions from upstream transportation and distribution include the scope 1 and scope 2 emissions of third-party transportation companies. So, if you are trying to “Unlock your Net Zero Future” please give them a call. PS. Please label your parcels correctly ahead of the silly season, makes a big mess when you don’t!

Happy to have moderated a Reuters webinar focused on debunking myths about fleet decarbonisation and addressing concerns surrounding the electrification of road transport.   A few key takeaways : ➡ Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicles (MHDVs) are key levers in the decarbonisation of road transport. While a technology mix is often at play within corporate fleets, the mainstream solution emerging is Battery Electric Trucks. They emit 63% less GHG than their diesel counterparts in Europe. ➡Things are moving fast, but the cost burden is falling disproportionately on fleets. Engaging in dialogues between OEMs, shippers and carriers is vital to ensure each actor in the ecosystem plays its role in accelerating the transition. ➡It's (almost) all about infrastructure. Anticipating the costs, dimensioning, and operation planning for charging are paramount to the success of a company's fleet electrification. Charging at depots is a big part of the answer but public infrastructure on the road needs to be further developed with the implementation of #AFIR and boosting innovative industry projects like Milence ! ➡ Corporate leadership, as showcased by Climate Group's #EV100 and #EV100+, is crucial for a successful transition. Here’s some good news for your morning coffee ritual: Truckers love driving electric trucks. Drayage (port trucking) operators love it when big shippers (think fortune 100 companies with lots of goods) pick them because electric trucking helps the companies meet their net zero targets. These same operators love Forum Mobility because they can switch over to electric, meet the state mandates, and do it all cost effectively. Win-win-win.

Electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are to be trialled across the UK in a new research programme to help freight operators decarbonise their fleets. Participating fleet operators, shippers and truck OEMs will develop a clear understanding of how electric vehicles and charging infrastructure can be deployed most effectively to do all of today’s logistics tasks and serve their business needs.  They will share the costs of running the trial and share their learning experiences in a pre-competitive environment. Project JOLT (Joint Operator Logistics Trial), led by The Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (SRF), currently involves 10 logistics partners , both large corporates and family-run businesses, including John Lewis Partnership and Welch’s Transport. It also involves a number of truck OEMs, including Volvo and DAF, as well as Flexible Power Systems (FPS), Evyve and PragmaCharge, who are leading companies in vehicle charging and electric truck operations. They can participate either by running a shared set of battery electric vehicles and fast chargers, supplied by the project team; or by sharing data from their own electric vehicles.
