Futurecity is known for our #cultural and #placemaking strategic work, but we also have a thriving #PublicArt department responsible for large scale multi-disciplinary projects from around the world. Our larger works are in collaboration with #Architects, #LandscapeArchitects and #Engineers and can take years to come to fruition. Futurecity were appointed in 2015 to deliver a #CulturalStrategy for Mount Anvil’s #KeybridgeHouse residential development in Nine Elms 598 homes in partnership with A2Dominion Group. One of our recommendations was for an ambitious public art commission (which through selection process was) won by artist #TomPrice in collaboration with landscape architects Planit ie. Tom Price’s large scale landscape intervention celebrates the #HiddenRiver #Effra which historically ran under the site. It is in my opinion a great public artwork, which should be better known and a brave and imaginative commission by the developer Mount Anvil. It is well worth paying a visit. One significant chapter of #Vauxhall history is the #LambethPotteries, which thrived on an industrial scale from the sixteenth until the nineteenth century. James J. Gibson was an important thinker in the realm of visual perception, yet was probably best known for developing the concept of the ‘affordances’ within our environments, meaning what our surrounds offers that are either helpful or not.   With perception, he explored the relationship between people and their surroundings, based on - their perceptual cone of view - linked to single point perspective and geometry.   Building on this concept, British landscape architect Clifford Tandy developed the concept of the isovist, which is the volume of space - that is visible by an individual - from a given location in space.   The isovist is one approach that can be used to describe spatial properties from a person-centered perspective, which importantly ties back to a view of sensing architecture specifically from the vantage point of a person and their body, moving through space.   This view contrasts with a cartesian/abstract experience of architecture and space, separated from a beholder-centred perspective.   The concept of the isovist can be expanded beyond just sight, to encompass all of the senses we use to experience the spaces we inhabit and move through. We are visually cataloging and inventorying! Many of the documents are close to 100 years old! Introducing the US Building Industry Collection, curated by Interior Technology Inc. It is the largest collection of antique and vintage building industry and building codes/standards books in the United States. Snow loading on branches has a dramatic effect on their growth and architecture. The conical shape of the hemlocks on the far shore here are one example. Each layer of branches gets longer from top to bottom, and when loaded with snow the lower branches help support the ones above it. With deciduous trees, a big snow load bends the whole trunk and can snap off many branches in a heavy, wet snow. This may have happened to the bowing birch tree on the right. Iconic structure. We see the application of architecture in various sectors, and in many cases, we come across truly unique and remarkable projects that can be considered innovative. For some time now, I've also had the chance to observe projects related to religious sites, and Lloyd Wright's Wayfarers Chapel outside of Los Angeles is one of these. Built in an organic style, it features large geometric windows surrounded by an intricate steel frame that incorporates the surrounding environment into its design, echoing the architectural language of Frank Lloyd Wright. The chapel, completed by his son in 1951, has remained a popular destination ever since. Following an increase in land movement surrounding the area, the organization has announced it will disassemble the landmark for preservation.
