It is not demonizing plastic to say we have a plastic problem. We cannot put the weight of responsibility just on consumers by hiding behind “recyclable packaging!” claims. We won’t recycle our way out of this gigantic, growing pile of trash. We need to go beyond reducing some of the plastic in current plastic packaging (although this is much needed) and look towards solutions focused on reducing as a whole and reusing. (And repairing the damages done to the environment and biodiversity of course.) This will be driven by innovation. Not by telling people they need to recycle (only 10% of plastic gets recycled globally and many countries do not have the right infrastructure in place, or do not have the capacity). This is a great illustration of the plastic pollution that is found in major cities throughout Africa. Although some municipalities such as Lagos Nigeria and Enugu Nigeria are implementing recycling programs, there has to be a reduction of the plastic production from the drink manufacturers in order to make this work. In fact, every major city in Africa must build and manage a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). And all the liquid bottling companies and the drink manufactures should pay at least 90% of the cost of construction and training. They broke it- they should help fix it.

Agree that we cannot recycle our way out of this. But is REFUSE -> REDUCE -> REUSE -> RECYCLE really the best solution? There more & better solutions ... Plastic bottles are very comfortable as the have little weight, are cheap and functional. So there are plenty of reasons people use it in huge quantities. 525 billion bottles each year are used globally. 99% is made from oil. Only 28% is recycled. How can we solve this issue? Important is that we start to REFUSE -> REDUCE -> REUSE -> RECYCLE. However, REFUSE and REDUCE is difficult for most people as running around with your own bottle all the time is not very convenient and then you need refill stations close by. REUSE and RECYCLE  is slightly increasing and there are new innovations but the rate is still moderate and the plastic issue is around since a long time. I suggest we start earlier with REDESIGN. REDESIGN in a way that bottles are bio-based, biodegradable and much easier to recycle. This approach will be more expensive in the beginning and will need subsidies by governments but we get away from fossil sources. Many times, I hear about sustainability on projects, in the form of LEED, FITWEL, WELL, purchasing new materials made from recycled materials, etc but what is often forgotten and can make a huge difference is our everyday purchasing power. The below post made me think about how much of an impact could we make if we switched some of these everyday decisions to more sustainable ones? Such as ordering from food vendors that supply compostable food containers, utensils, and cups, especially if the office has a compost bin. What impact could we have if we made these small decisions that would align with an organization's overall sustainability goals? You can sense the terror in this corporate backed ad campaign. The industry is "pulling out all the stops" to convince us we can carry refillable plastic bottles around to solve the crisis... Not gonna happen. Yes, we need to return back to reusable, recyclable glass but the industry and convenience-conditioned consumer will not cooperate. Step 1 : countries like India  should ban poly carry bags all over India ( the ban is only in paper not in real life) stop the production of those poly carry bags encourage folks to  go for reusable bags. Then the below for soft drinks  Sooner the better
