When I was hiring email & SMS team members when I was VP of Retention, I looked for these three critical marketing traits.  And it will help your ecommerce brand find better teams to work with.  1) Strategy-first mindset 2) People who walk the walk  2) Sales background Let me explain: First, find people who have a strategy-first mindset.  And know how to implement those high-level strategies using eye-level tactics.  9 out of 10 people do tactics. It takes a master orchestrator to blend tactics into a winning email program.  Second, find team members who have ACTUALLY DONE IT.  Every hire I made came from a 9-figure or 10-figure brand.  Not the "talkers" who learned it from a course or LinkedIn post like 90% do right now. Those "walkers" had a level of expertise I wanted on my team.  Because they were definitely smarter than me.  Walk the walk, don't talk about it.  Third, and this is the mindblowing one... Find someone who knows how to sell. I started my career as a door-to-door salesman.  And understanding how to build relationships IN SECONDS with people who answer the door is a critical skill for email, SMS and retention.  Hardly anyone I meet has a sales background. Just glorified designers & copywriters.  So I aimed higher and found true seasoned salespeople who could convert their sales mindset into a digital channel.  --- These hires helped us grow a 9-figure brand's revenue from $47M to $73M in 8 months. And a 10-figure brand from $10M to $29M in 12 months.
