Two years ago, Roe v. Wade was overturned in the United States. This is a chilling anniversary to mark. One we didn’t think we would see a few years ago. As we have said repeatedly: abortions happen whether they are legal or not. When folks seek abortion care outside of a regulated medical facility, the possibilities of infection, permanent damage, or even death are many. We cannot ever stop fighting to ensure abortion access stays legal. We need to continue our work to ensure folks can access abortion care no matter where they live. WHC provides up to 600 more abortion procedures than we are funded for every year. That amounts to $300,000 in overall costs with these additional procedures. We have been able to deliver this because of generous donations from our community, but we need long-term solutions to ensure we are adequately funded and resourced to continue delivering our crucial care. Over my almost one-and-a-half years with the Online Abortion Resource Squad (OARS), I've been able to help thousands of people on Reddit access abortion care — as well as what they need to know to cover the costs, prepare for their experiences, and connect with available resources. For those who aren't familiar with Reddit, it's the world's biggest online-sharing platform. r/abortion, the abortion forum on Reddit, is the first (and sometimes only) place over 800,000 people went to for support in 2023. OARS runs r/abortion. We were founded as a stop-gap solution for the complex and fragmented system of abortion care. The truth is, few abortion seekers know where to find the information they need to access care. Many feel completely alone in their experiences. OARS shows up where abortion seekers already are (on Reddit) and compassionately guides them through and beyond their abortions. We're like a switchboard that connects abortion seekers all around the globe to whatever they need to meet their care, support, and informational needs. People often reach out to me asking what they can do to support abortion access. There are so many ways to do that, including donating to abortion funds, practical support organizations, and independent abortion clinics. As the year comes to a close, please consider contributing to scaling up and improving the work we do at OARS. As we near the end of Sexual Assault Awareness month, we’re reminded of a shocking study reveals over 64,000 pregnancies from rape in states with total abortion bans since the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision. In states without rape exceptions, the number is nearly 59,000. The impact is staggering, with Texas alone accounting for over 26,000 cases. These numbers highlight the urgent need to address the negative implications of such bans, which exacerbate stigma, limit access to care, and force survivors into untenable situations. Two stories published today underscore how shield laws are changing the landscape for access to essential abortion care in states that ban abortion. The first piece, published in Ms. Magazine, covers Healthcare Across Borders' Abortion Pill Sustainability Fund, through which we reimburse shield law providers for their work to serve clients on a sliding scale in banned states. Today marks two years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe. In that time, a vast network of doctors, abortion funds, volunteers, researchers, lawyers and donors, has, against all odds, connected thousands of women living in states with bans or restrictions with abortion providers. But a state-by-state patchwork of abortion access is not a sustainable model for public health. Until the day reproductive freedom is codified (and likely even for a period after), the network getting women to care needs transformational funding. My latest Bloomberg Opinion column (gift link):

Gift giving to support reproductive rights This essay is adapted from a blog by Jessica Valenti. If you support reproductive rights for women in the US, it is also important to support the groups that are doing the difficult work of helping women and girls and advocating for these rights. You can donate in someone else’s name to turn that support into a thoughtful gift. What better present than making a meaningful impact where it’s needed most? Let’s start with abortion and practical support funds: These are the folks who are working overtime - largely as volunteers - to ensure that the people who need abortions can get them. They’re working directly with patients to fund their abortions, along with any necessary travel, hotel rooms or child care. They’re also doing all that logistical work to make sure that patients’ care goes as smoothly and compassionately as possible. Abortion funds have always been essential, but their importance has taken on new meaning since Roe was overturned. And in the last few months, donations to these groups have dropped off. This week we saw that access to abortion, protecting LGBTQ+ rights, and building a community of care not hate are majority views and values. We know that these wins do not come easily. I am daily inspired and heartened by the work of groups that CGRE has the privilege of funding. These leaders are adapting to the ever-changing access landscape and work every day to ensure that all voices are heard in our democracy, despite attempts to limit access to services and the vote. Check out the Philanthropy News Digest (PND) article that addresses the evolving funding needs of organizations defending and advancing reproductive equity in the aftermath of Dobbs. Well before Dobbs, CGRE recognized the significance of funding state-based initiatives, enhancing organizational capacity, and addressing intersectional issues. Now, more than ever, it's crucial to support organizations in realizing their visions of reproductive freedom.
