A Scoping Review of Universal Design for Learning in United States Allied Health & Medical Education By: Karolina Gawron, OTD; Madison J. Tomlinson, OTD; Nicole U. Mohan, candidate OTD; Laura VanPuymbrouck, PhD., OTR/L Universal design for learning (UDL) is considered best-practice for embracing inclusion for students with disabilities and there is growing evidence of its effectiveness in primary, secondary, and postsecondary education. However, little is known about if and how UDL is being implemented into United States graduate allied health and medical school curriculum as well as evidence of its benefits. 🎉 Meet Lewis Williams, one of our incredible #ElevatingTheSafetyNet medical school scholars! 🩺 Lewis is one of eight students awarded a full-ride medical school scholarship, allowing him to chase his dream of becoming a doctor without the burden of debt. It was Lewis’s love for science, learning about the disparities affecting African American communities, and recognizing the healthcare gaps in our system that inspired him to pursue medicine. He is determined to represent and uplift those from underserved communities. This year, four of our L.A. Care Elevating the Safety Net Scholars, including Lewis, will attend Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, which recently opened its own independent medical school—thanks in part to a $5 million grant from L.A. Care. 🎓 This initiative is not only working to increase the number of physicians in the healthcare safety net, but it is also striving to increase diversity among the physician workforce in L.A. County. Research shows racial and ethnic diversity in the physician workforce improves outcomes in communities of color. Embarking on a transformative journey since April 2020, my course on COVID-19 has evolved alongside the pandemic. With over 1,100 Stanford students, we've delved into COVID-19's clinical impact and its profound societal repercussions on health drivers, policies, and inequalities. Seeing my students' impact firsthand has been inspiring. Some collaborated with community partners, bridging critical gaps caused by the pandemic. Predictions are dangerous, but the reporting and investigation about UCLA Medical School admissions strike me as ominous for any highly selective admissions office that is 1) relying on essays and proxy values to continue seeking racial diversity at the review stage; 2) defending a decision to restore required testing as a means to (contextually) aim for diversity. Broader educational reform, wider definitions of excellence, and deeper engagements like recruiting: these are the answers. Not workarounds parenthetically teased by a conservative Chief Justice, and not delusional “wow, we were surprised” to discover contextual admissions practices that were both well known and yet not satisfying enough prior to 2020, and that amount to a “Kick Me!” sign taped to the back of admissions offices now.

The third episode of "Conversations in Med Ed" is out, where I chat with Prof Richard Canter: https://lnkd.in/e6jqBgbd He reflects over the decades of his fascinating career, sharing his story of how he, a surgeon, became involved in medical education and research. This includes curriculum, assessment, quality assurance and reforming surgical education in the UK (and many other settings), the importance of collaboration and the open sharing of intellectual property (for global change), and issues of power and hierarchy (and competing interests of stakeholders) in the health professions. His story, and success, is encouraging for the very reasons that much of the journey was not intentional but “a series of accidental events”. The importance of curiosity and continued evolution (and the usefulness of mistakes), questioning assumptions, working across generations and learning together, and being strategic and purposeful in qualification and career decisions (with education being a great place to be!) are some of the takeaways.
