The Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, along with government, community, and nonprofit partners, announced today a collective effort called the Maui Interim Housing Plan, committing a total of $500 million ($50 million from HCF’s Maui Strong Fund) to create a pool of more than 3,000 stable housing units for households displaced by the Maui fires, who are currently in short-term hotel rooms. Currently, around 2,400 households, totaling more than 5,928 individuals, remain housed in more than 30 hotels throughout Maui. The collective goal is to ensure that all individuals and families who are in short-term hotels have long-term, stable housing by July 1, 2024. The Maui Interim Housing Plan outlines a phased approach to delivering housing, prioritizing options that produce permanent housing, efficient use of funds, and readiness for move-in by survivors. Announced today at Maui Lani in Kahului, which is one of the future build sites included in the plan, this collaborative effort was solidified as a Memorandum of Understanding among partners, and includes the state of Hawai‘i, County of Maui, the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the American Red Cross. Beyond immediate emergency response, we emphasize the importance of sustained #investment in resilient and #greenhousing, recognizing it as a crucial aspect of fostering economic #growth and long-term community resilience. "Ensuring everyone has a roof over their head isn't an act of charity—it's a fundamental human right. At the heart of what we do lies the commitment to repair the broken links in #housing markets. Every day, we strive not just to offer shelter, but to build a sustainable value chain that guarantees housing access for all. Because a home should be a right, not a privilege." — Olivia Nielsen #AffordableHousing #Sustainability #EHF24 #Community #MiyamotoWomen #BuildResilience #Shelter #HousingForAll #GlobalGoals #CollectiveOutcomes #Humanitarian #InspireInclusion

The Petition to Restore Vancouver Island Rail just reached Twenty Two Thousand Two Hundred Twenty Two (22222) signatures! https://chng.it/HTPJ25CqPr I started the grass roots petition on July 28th, 2023 to raise Public awareness about the benefits of rail and the very real risk of losing the corridor if the government doesn't fund the track repairs. Remember, The Island Rail Corridor is a community asset owned by the 14 First Nations and 5 Regional Districts who are linked along the line. The Island Corridor Foundation is a non-profit registered charity. This is our last chance to have to have a sustainable, comfortable, accessible, and dignified way to travel on Southern Vancouver Island. I've put together a document called Vancouver Island Rail Project – The Last Opportunity that outlines these benefits and the risks involved with losing it. You can read it online, or download it as a PDF so you can send it to decision makers. https://lnkd.in/d-APhPPD Be sure to answer the BC Government sponsored surveys • https://lnkd.in/gjH6cJNJ (open until Sep 30th) • https://lnkd.in/gVZHPJmp (open until Sep 26th) Pin what you'd like to see next to the railway on a map (CVRD only) https://lnkd.in/gDp-7mbu All Aboard! www.restoreislandrail.com #reconcilation #railway #transit #support #cycling #route #malahat #vancouverisland #britishcolumbia #canada #connection #transportation #disabled #multimodal #cyclists #alternate #railways #support #healthy #communities #climateaction #climate #emergency #health #travel #community #culture

LET'S GET BACK ON TRACK The Island Corridor Foundation, the registered charity non-profit that owns the Vancouver Island Rail Corridor received none of the $18 million to develop a shared vision. Instead, the BC Government sent the money to the Island Corridor Foundation’s primary members, the 5 Regional Districts and 14 First Nations the railway passes through. We can already see the lack of coordination happening in the two very distinctly different surveys put out by the Cowichan Valley Regional District and the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. • https://lnkd.in/gjH6cJNJ • https://lnkd.in/gVZHPJmp The CVRD has an interactive GIS map set up (https://lnkd.in/gDp-7mbu), but they only allow you to add comments in the section of the railway that goes through the CVRD. Is the ACRD, RDN, CVRD North, and every First Nation going to do the same thing? LET’S DO BETTER We need to have one central organization putting all the pieces together and ensuring what is gathered is useful. What better organization to do that than the Island Corridor Foundation, the owner that has every Regional District and First Nation the line passes through as members. There are nearly 22,100 people that have signed the petition to get back on track. https://chng.it/HTPJ25CqPr All Aboard! www.restoreislandrail.com #reconcilation #railway #transit #support #cycling #route #malahat #vancouverisland #britishcolumbia #canada #connection #transportation #disabled #multimodal #cyclists #alternate #railways #support #healthy #communities #climateaction #climate #emergency #health #travel #community #culture

The Community Services Recovery Fund #CSRF provided $400 million to 5,500 #charities across Canada! They used these funds to recruit and train #volunteers; improve their #marketing to share information about their #services; strengthen their #leadership - and in many other ways #enhance their #impact. Many organizations also promised to create a #fundraising #plan so they could increase their #revenue for future program delivery. But . . . the June 30 deadline is approaching – and many organizations don’t have a fundraising plan written yet! It’s not your fault – there are very few fundraising #consultants who focus on helping #small organizations. You don’t need a #cookiecutter plan – you need a plan that’s #unique like you! Small groups are #special. How you #work, #collaborate, #share, and #help is different than anyone else. So your fundraising plan needs to meet your unique needs! I’ve been working with small #charities and #nonprofits for over 30 years. I understand how small groups work and help others. Their cultures and collaborations are different than large organizations. So they need someone who knows how to help them! If you’re looking for help with your fundraising plan, let’s connect. Send me a message – we’ll talk by phone or video, and discuss your needs. There’s no fee for these exploratory calls – I just want to understand your needs, and how I could help. I look forward to hearing from you soon! https://lnkd.in/gPxVce9B

New Report from UK Community Foundations. Just before Christmas we published ‘Philanthropy 2023’, a network-wide impact report that looks at the impact of place-based philanthropy in the UK. In 2023, we have seen a drive from donors to reduce social inequity and build community resilience. In the report, we share some of the work from our 2022-2023 partnerships and events, while looking ahead at the future potential of place-based philanthropy in improving social equity. To summarise: A new report from UK Community Foundations shows the determination of communities to prevail through tough times have not faded. UK donors and communities are determined to drive philanthropy forwards to tackle the root causes of social inequity and climate change in the face of today’s financial turmoil, according to a new report published by UKCF. · Community foundations in the UKCF network collectively cover every postcode in the UK. · Between April 2022 and March 2023, community foundations worked with national and regional partners to distribute over £170.6 million in the form of 40,804 grants to charities and voluntary organisations throughout the UK. · Tackling the root causes of social inequity has been a key focus of local funding, collaborating with donors and communities alike to support grassroots resilience. · Over £811 million is being managed by the UKCF network in community-focused endowments, being invested by communities for communities. This has risen by 14% since 2020, showing a drive for more sustainable support at a local level. · Climate change is affecting UK communities in inequal measures. Philanthropic collaboration with community foundations is supporting diverse communities on a national scale to adapt to the inevitable impacts of an increase in global temperature. You can find the full report here. https://lnkd.in/ejCrN55n #philanthropy #communityfoundations # Best wishes, Rosemary

Tonight is a big night for the Dubbo Community. Last year I was approached by a local businessman, Steven Wilson (pictured). Steve came to me with an idea. He wanted to do something that contributed positively, and supported vulnerable people in our community to access opportunities. He developed this concept across 110 acres of land he owns and wanted to invite the community to use the land. Fast-forward to tonight and we're holding our first public meeting to formally invite the community to share their needs and ideas. As anyone in the community development and grants space know, when there's a huge need in the community that's 'hidden' because organisations aren't able to advocate or co-ordinate themselves for advocacy they often just put up with the status quo. The flow-on effect is that they're restricting services to the community, other services go out of town, people travel out of town for recreation purposes that should be available and it reduces a communities liveability. Then we have social issues, which in part, are symptoms of this (lack of services, opportunities etc.). Our team is honoured to lead this project. It's the first community led precinct example I can find in Australia. However, if you know of other examples pls share. For those interested in coming tonight, you can find out more and register here: https://lnkd.in/g6kzadsj #communitydevelopment #precinct #not-for-profits #buildingcommunity
