Rather than only creating experiences for children, The Clyfford Still Museum initiated a long-term project to engage families in which over 250 children collaborated as co-curators for an innovative new exhibition. The children participated by selecting objects, providing design input, contributing in-gallery interpretations, and leading tours. Nicole Cromartie, Director of Education and Programs, and Bailey Placzek, Associate Curator and Project Manager at The Clyfford Still delve into project and the outcomes in this free article from the Fall 2023 issue of Exhibition journal, which was our # 2️⃣ of the Top 🔟 most read posts in 2023! https://lnkd.in/gCJchp4i

I love bold ideas for reshaping the way we support arts & culture in our country. This is an interesting one: what if we funded operating costs as infrastructure? "As with infrastructure projects such as the building and maintenance of highways, funding cultural institutions will directly support employment: Culture in the United States employs about five million people and pumps about $1 trillion into the economy annually. New funding would boost local economies, cultivate a more equitable arts sector, and promote and protect arts organizations in small and medium-size cities. It would help to disentangle larger arts institutions from the largess of wealthy individuals and corporations, which currently wield an inordinate and thorny amount of influence. (Think of the Sackler family.) And it could defang some of the most pernicious culture-war arguments against arts funding, since it’s much harder to object to paying to fix a museum’s leaky roof than to paying to exhibit a photograph." A good read! Thanks for sharing it Joe Waters!

Including my quote, which hopefully offers an insightful perspective.
The Center Square recently published a story on whether Georgia cities should fund and operate museums, featuring insights from Barry Hersh, professor at the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate. --- "Museums play an important role in providing citizens, including children, a greater awareness of a community's nature, history, and the arts in general," Hersh told The Center Square via email. "Along with parks, historic preservation, and libraries, museums are key to defining a city's unique character, a core asset without which a city is poorer. --- Read more: https://lnkd.in/gTtuUWdr #WeAreSPS #NYUSchack #NYURealEstate NYU School of Professional Studies

This has been my passion for so long—to create an art gallery in our city that not only recognizes past and present artists, hosts shows and collections, and offers programming and events for schools, families, seniors, and tourists, and so much more. A central, dedicated space—all its own—where all can explore, experience, and immerse in arts and culture. Welland is growing rapidly, but our arts infrastructure is not keeping pace. The current approach, with arts programming fragmented across various venues, fails to harness the full potential of our creative community. It's more than white walls. An art gallery is not just a cultural luxury—it is an economic necessity. It is an investment in our community that will bring substantial socio-economic benefits when done right. Baseball never partnered with hockey for shared space. Our city, rich in history and vibrant in community spirit, is growing faster than ever, attracting new residents and businesses, new opportunities. Yet, despite this rapid growth, we have failed to harness the transformative power of the arts. It's time to build a space where creativity thrives, and our community flourishes. Ignite the arts in Welland—support our gallery! Sign and share this petition, let's make this vision a reality. https://chng.it/qDRmdQVffK

Find more fantastic free programming in your community for older adults by checking out these three resources in your own area: 1. Art Galleries & Museums: Some museums and art galleries offer free or discounted art classes, socials, and workshops for older adults, especially during certain times or as part of special events. 2. Senior Centres: Senior centres frequently organize art programs tailored specifically for older adults. These programs may range from traditional art classes to more specialized offerings like photography or sculpture. 3. Online Platforms: While not location-specific, older adults can explore online platforms that offer free art tutorials, resources, and communities for creative expression from the comfort of their own homes. Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ten North Group (formerly Opa-Locka Community Development Corporation - OLCDC)
Ten North Group (formerly Opa-Locka Community Development Corporation - OLCDC) and the City of Opa-locka are undertaking to advocate for Opa-locka to become the chosen city for the proposed Florida Museum of Black History. We've recently submitted a proposal to the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force in Tallahassee, highlighting the unique cultural significance and historical richness of Opa-locka, as well as the “why” of the city becoming the chosen location for this important institution (strategic location in greater South Florida, proximity to public transit and higher ed institutions, etc.). As part of this effort, the Division of Historical Resources (DHR) is seeking input from the public through a crucial survey. Your participation in this survey is vital to demonstrate community support for Opa-locka as the future home of the museum. Your input will help showcase the significance of establishing the museum at an existing 4-acre regional state complex in our downtown. Please take a moment to complete the survey by clicking on the link provided below: https://lnkd.in/e3-29-G7 We ask for you to complete the survey no later than this Friday, February 16 at 5 p.m., in advance of their next meeting on the 19th. Additionally, I’m including the survey questions below for your review: • What questions do you have about the proposed Florida Museum of Black History? • What kind of experiences should museum visitors have while touring galleries and exhibit spaces? • In addition to the topics listed in CS/HB 1441 (Chapter 2023-72, Laws of Florida), what other topics do you want to see in the Florida Museum of Black History? • What kind of facilities and services would you prefer to have available at the Florida Museum of Black History? • Where in Florida do you think the proposed Florida Museum of Black History should be located? • What are the key factors to consider while selecting a suitable site for the proposed Florida Museum of Black History? • What would be your top three reasons for visiting the proposed Florida Museum of Black History? • In your opinion, what are the most important factors to consider when planning for the proposed Florida Museum of Black History? • Do you have any other questions, comments, or concerns? Thank you for your participation and support in this endeavor. Together, we can work towards making Opa-locka the chosen city for the future Florida Museum of Black History.

April is Arts Month in Marin! If you didn’t see the Sunday’s Marin IJ article by Gabriella Calicchio, here are a few takeaways: *California is home to more artists than anywhere else in the nation. *Our state’s creative sector accounts for $18.67 billion in assets and 15.4% of California’s total employment. *According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the arts represent a larger share of the gross domestic product than transportation, tourism and agriculture. *In Marin County alone, the arts contribute $76 million to our local economy, employing over 1,700 people in 162 arts organizations. *We understand the value of culture and innovation. https://lnkd.in/g5CUkvCC
