Millions of tonnes of sand have passed through this facility over the years. We went down to check it out. Thanks to the team at the Tweed Sand Bypassing (TSB) system for giving us the rundown and a behind the scenes tour of this iconic piece of Gold Coast coastal management history. The TSB Project addresses the critical issue of sand migration, ensuring that the natural northward movement of sand is maintained despite the barriers created by the rock training walls at the Tweed River entrance. The system operates continuously, mimicking natural sand transport processes and adapting to varying wave conditions. This innovative system not only prevents severe erosion of the southern Gold Coast beaches but also keeps the Tweed River entrance navigable. Managed collaboratively by the NSW Government and Queensland Government, with support from the City of Gold Coast and Tweed Shire Council, TSB is a model of intergovernmental cooperation in coastal management. Regular environmental monitoring, including beach profile surveys and continuous wave condition assessments is done, to ensure the system's effectiveness and minimal environmental impact. This innovative system exemplifies the forward-thinking approach to coastal management on the Gold Coast, which is one of the most efficient and coastal-resilient locations globally, making it an incredibly interesting and inspiring place to work (despite the unusually cold and wet day this was).
