Aged care I Health care I Advocacy I Leadership I Academia "If you must work, work to leave some part of you on this earth" K.H.
A few days ago I had a very interesting discussion with fellow aged care professionals. Among care minutes, quality indicators and retention strategies, one said: "if we do not truly respect and care for our elders, if we dont treat them as we would want to be treated, all standards, guidelines and bussiness tactics are meaningless"💡What a powerful statement! I remembered Dostoyevsky, who, through Ivan Karamazov, said : "One can love one's neighbours in the abstract, or even at a distance, but at close quarters it's almost impossible." Suddenly all our guidelines and care minutes seemed like they are describing this abstract notion of care. It sounds really good from a distance but at close quarters its a different story. When Care is the end product, should our top priority be adherence to protocols or the desire to serve as we would like to be served, which in turn will make protocols a definite priority ? A retired psychiatrist once told me: "the best healthcare professionals are not those who know anatomy and physiology by heart. Are those who are willing to give their heart for the anatomy and physiology of each patient" 🤍 It will be interesting to see what we, health and agedcare professionals, will think when we will be at the receiving end of this care...🔜🔚 #agedcare #seniorscare #healthcare #leadership #empathy #careminutes #standardsofcare
