No -- he doesn't. I reject this entire notion that a city manager must profess absolute devotion and loyalty to a city that can fire you on a whim. The City of Kansas City, MO needs to convince Brian Platt to stay long term. I don't know Platt, nor do I have any inside information. What I do know is that the City of Austin is going to be considered a top 5 destination for many city managers, if not the top destination. If you had an opportunity to play or coach for the Yankees... If you were being recruited by Google or Apple... ...of course you are going to consider it! There is no shame in testing the waters to see if the Austin opportunity might have been a realistic possibility. This is a resume capstone, if ever there was one. And frankly, there is no shame even if he was simply leveraging Austin to extract a stronger contract and better compensation in KC. This op-ed writer is seriously confused about the current market dynamics for city managers across the nation. It is thin. There is more demand for talented managers than there is supply -- for a variety of reasons. A great read that challenges perceptions of working in the public service. I ran up against this narrative often when making my own jump from private to public ten years ago. As Lindsay Broadhead describes in her op-ed: “Woven into the fabric of private-sector culture are assumptions of bureaucratic sluggishness, slow action and a clocking-in-and-out pace. The notion is a relic of past economies.” Like my colleague in Toronto, what I discovered at Northumberland County was a workforce of experts from a diversity of fields, and a sense of “purpose and service” among fellow employees as we come together to tackle challenges facing the community. Over a decade in, the pull of this meaningful work has never diminished. #publicservice #localgov #employeeengagement #municipalities

Now in St Louis. Learning a lot about city people and county people. Different considerations. Same concerns. And I did mean “county” people not “country” people. This is not a David Allen Coe song or Green Acres. Nobody is going to get that joke 😎 We’re at the point in the process where we have enough clues to start defining our themes. Some are intuitive. Some stretch our brains. But that’s why we immerse, observe and listen to all of these voices. Brian St. Onge continues to bring out the best in our respondents. This does not work without effective moderation and collaboration. Key lesson learned is the value of human contact. The ability to interact with other humans increases confidence. Like the confidence it takes to ride all the way to the top 👇

Sheena Iyengar is one my favorite people. I first learned of Prof Iyengar in 2010 when I was living in London, as her first book “The Art of Choosing” was making waves. It was a great introduction into the science of decision making and real life applications. Later in 2019, along with producer Ben Patterson, I had the chance to meet with Sheena in her offices at Columbia Business School. At the time she mentioned that her second book - “Think Bigger” - was in progress. I have a sense it will do for the #innovation world all that “The Art of Choosing” did for the #marketing world. We're looking for Access Now's next Director of Policy and International Programs. It is a bit of an impossible job because it's a combination of organisational management and program leadership and the two are hardly ever in a healthy balance. We really need someone who is more than just okay with being a manager. It's a team of 30+ people led by 7-8 regional leads who know their shit, who have egos and a regional team and priorities they will fight for. The organisation went through fast growth, we have ungoverned parallel roles and structures with not enough clarity in terms of hierarchy and decision-making. Not to mention issues vs regions, you know the drill. Our executive director is one of the co-founders of Access Now so as always there's the managing up component. Not a lot of fundraising and not enough external representation but that could be different. A lot of room to bring vision, policy alignment and advocacy strategy to the role. What else... it's a fantastic team, you'll be inspired by your colleagues every day. I also think that Access Now has an impact which is not a given these days.
