Words matter! Yesterday, the European Parliament (EP) agreed with the negotiated text of the Directive empowering consumers for the green transition. Based on the adopted text by the EP, vague claims made by companies about the environmental impact of their products or services will not be permitted unless they can be backed up with evidence. Think about claims we often see, like: ‘eco-friendly’, ‘environmentally friendly’, ‘natural’, ‘recycled’ and ‘biodegradable'. The question remains, what will eventually be regarded as evidence; after all the proof is in the puding. Furthermore, the use of sustainability labels will be regulated. In the future, only sustainability labels based on official certification schemes or established by public authorities will be allowed in the EU. Another important step concerns the durability of goods. In the future, guarantee information has to be more visible and a new, harmonised label will be created to give more prominence to goods with an extended guarantee period. The new rules will also ban unfounded durability claims or prompts to replace consumables earlier than strictly necessary. As example, the press release refers to (i) claims stating that a washing machine will last for 5,000 washing cycles if this is not true under normal conditions or (ii) presenting goods as repairable when they are not (for example, printer ink). The Directive now needs to be formally endorsed by the Council followed by its publication in the EU's Official Journal. After the publication, Member States have two years to transpose the Directive into national law. #ESG #Greenclaims #EUlaw #climateneutral

This is a topic that matters to all of us, and of course, it's about an industry that I serve since decades: packaging business! Without packaging medicine, food and other products would be unavailable. At the same time, waste from packaging has given rise to one of the biggest environmental crises of our time. Governments are already introducing plastic taxes and additional regulations. Most businesses are aware of upcoming regulation, however the majority still need to make ‘moderate’ to ‘significant’ changes in order to comply. Another step forward!! Yesterday the European Parliament agreed with the negotiated text of the Directive empowering consumers for the green transition: vague claims about the environmental impact of a product or service, sustainability labels and unfounded durability claim are examples of topics specifically regulated in the text. If the Council also formally finally endorses the negotiated text, the Directive is adopted following its publication in the Official Journal. Member States have two years to transpose the Directive into national law. Stay tuned for the next steps and reach out in case you need to know more about implications for your business and marketing. #ESG #Greenclaims #EUlaw #climateneutral #greenwashing
