The Power of “Ha” It was a few months ago when I had a one-on-one conversation with my direct report, a young colleague from Generation Z who eventually left her job due to a perceived mismatch between her role and her physical well-being. This individual possessed a sharp intellect and was exceptionally cooperative. However, the fast-paced nature of our work environment, combined with tight project deadlines, had hindered my ability to adapt to her preferred communication style, which leaned towards warmth and empathy. She confided in me that when I assigned tasks through instant messaging, they came across as rigid and lacking emotional warmth. Although it wasn't my intention to make her feel that way, I promptly apologized for any unintended impact. So, I asked her, "How can I communicate better with you?" Her response was simple: "Just add 'Ha' at the end of your sentences." Internally, I couldn't help but ponder the unique expectations of the Z generation when it comes to written communication. Initially, I found it amusing, but I soon realized its significance. You see, I come from Generation Y, and I've worked with Baby Boomers and Gen Xers. In those days, I didn't mind receiving straightforward messages without warm fuzzies or emojis. But this new generation, they're different, and adaptation has become essential. So, I mustered a heartfelt "Thanks, ha. I appreciate your feedback." From that moment on, I made sure to occasionally sprinkle in a little "ha" or even an emoji into my messages. What followed was a surprising transformation in our communication, a transformation that bridged the generation gap and unveiled the power of those two little letters – 'Ha.' #GenYLeadership #Leadership #TeamEngagement #LeadershipAdvice
