Although Belgium is holding the Presidency of the Council for the 13th time the European election is gaining the least traction 2️⃣ While holding the elections for the respective assemblies on the same day has a practical advantage, it reduces the capacity to identify which level of power is competent for which matter 3️⃣ A mega election campaign pushes political parties to prioritise where their money should be spent. The head of the Liberal Renew group said that the European Union could become ungovernable if the far-right performs well in the upcoming EU parliament elections in June 2024. This comes as far-right parties like Marine Le Pen's National Rally in France and Matteo Salvini's League in Italy are expected to prosper in the upcoming elections. In addition, anti-immigration populist Geert Wilders win the Dutch elections has sent a warning to leftists and centrists in Europe. Will the far-right be able to govern Europe? How will it look like? Will anti-immigration policies be adopted in Europe? How will this affect the economy? politics?

One of the most interesting things I've found during this election cycle on the road to the EU elections in France has been the spillover of national debates into the space. We find a Bardella (Le Pen camp) and Hayer (Macron camp) match up once more. But with current polls indicating 31% of 18–24-year-olds voting for the far-right and only 4% voting for the presidential camp, there are clearly lessons to be drawn on the road to the Presidential elections in 2027. The EU election results will be important for France to take seriously moving forward.

Rightward shift expected across EU in May European Parliament elections #bne #bneEditorsPicks #EU A shift to the right is expected across many EU member states in the upcoming 2024 European Parliament elections, with populist radical right parties poised to gain significant traction at the expense of centre-left and green parties. According to research by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) based on early polling data, anti-European populist movements are expected to lead in nine member states including all of the Visegrad Four countries, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. They are projected to secure second or third positions in nine others including Bulgaria and Romania in Southeast Europe and the Baltic states of Estonia and Latvia.

With the European Parliament elections coming up this week, on 6-9 of June, the lead candidates chosen by the EU political groups to head the European Commission – spitzenkandidatens – are in the spotlight, as one of them is likely to become the next Commission President. In this context, Members of the CPMR Political Bureau want to extend their concerns on different topics, ranging from energy to Cohesion policy, innovation or regional specificities. In a series of videos, regional leaders from peripheral and maritime regions have asked short sharp questions to the Spitzenkandidat.
