It has been a rewarding experience to serve on the Steering Committee for Anne Arundel County Public Schools in developing its new strategic plan. Tonight the completed plan is being presented to the Board of Education. This dynamic strategic plan highlights the voice of the community whose voices were sought through forty six meetings. Student voice was prominent throughout the planning process. Here a student discusses a Portrait of a Graduate which is a part of the plan. Belong, Grow, Succeed are the tenets which guides Dr. Mark Bedell Ed.D. leadership.

Designing a graduate course on ed leadership has me reflecting on how we aim this leadership. We can continuously improve oppression and we can lead to keep the same systems and approaches firmly in place. Deeper learning and continuous improvement for equity offer possibilities of what we're aiming for and how we're getting there in our educational ecosystems. 🌟 Publication alert 🌟 🎉 I’m very excited to share our new publication (in collaboration with Jan Vanhoof and Noel Clycq): Explaining Academic Optimism in Schools: The Impact of Performance Leadership and Alignment between Teachers, Students, and Parents. 🔍 This research provides strong evidence that a school leader’s deliberate emphasis on academic optimism creates significant opportunities. This leadership approach not only strengthens teachers’ trust and academic emphasis, but also enhances connections between teachers, parents, and students, positively influencing all facets of school academic optimism. In turn, this contributes to improved student performance and greater educational equity. 🏫 The findings offer practical insights for school leaders seeking to create positive change by fostering trust, setting high expectations, and building stronger relationships within the school community.
