Allowing double duplexes on single-family lots has been one of the city’s most effective measures to increase affordable housing. This policy has provided a practical solution to address LA’s housing shortage, creating more homes where they’re desperately needed. But now, proposed zoning changes threaten to undo this progress, eliminating a vital pathway for affordable housing development. LABA is advocating to protect these zoning policies and ensure we continue building a more inclusive and sustainable Los Angeles. It's disheartening (and alarming) that Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco are absent from this map. While I commend the cities across the country that are building to address the housing crisis, there's still a lot of work to be done. I'll give Jersey City their deserved props though. Please keep up the momentum 👏 https://lnkd.in/eb8BdqvT #housing #urbanplanning

In order to make affordable housing such as manufactured homes more readily available for Americans across the country, we have to start paying attention to local zoning codes and the role they play in what can and can't be built in urban areas. Most of the changes in zoning happens at a local level and require vocal, hands-on involvement from people who want to see more affordable housing available in their own communities. The biggest question that we get asked around zoning, and that we asked ourselves is, "Where do we start?" The answer is the National Zoning Atlas (NZA). The NZA aims to digitize, demystify and democratize information currently hidden within ~30,000 U.S. zoning codes. This includes pushing back on the "Not In My Backyard" zoning restrictions that have kept manufactured housing out of urban areas that desperately need more housing inventory. Recently, we had the opportunity to speak to the founder and director of the NZA, Sara C. Bronin, after her panel at the 2024 Innovative Housing Showcase in Washington DC to learn more about the Atlas and how it helps get easy-to-use information into the hands of people fighting for change. 🏙️ Are opportunities for affordable housing being overlooked in Jersey City? 🏙️ A recent op-ed from the Jersey City Times highlights decisions around city-owned properties and raises questions about maximizing their potential for affordable housing. Two examples: 🔹 Manila Avenue: A 6-story development with no affordable units was approved, despite zoning allowing for a larger building with 150 units, including 23 affordable units. 🔹 Sip Avenue: A 30-story project with 10% affordable units was approved, though zoning bonuses could have supported a 47-story building with significantly more units, including 40–80 additional affordable homes. These decisions have sparked a discussion about how public land can best be utilized to address housing needs while balancing community goals. What are your thoughts on the role of city-owned land in tackling housing challenges? #AffordableHousing #JerseyCity #UrbanPlanning #NewJersey #Development https://lnkd.in/e3PpQaZu

Why don’t we see more projects like these in established communities? In many areas, restrictive regulations and complicated approval processes make building townhomes challenging and expensive. While middle housing continues to spark debate, here’s what we believe: Middle housing is NOT about: -Squeezing as many units as possible onto a lot. -Being a silver bullet for housing affordability. Middle housing IS about: -Creating diversity and inclusivity within communities. 🌍 -Using land more efficiently and providing more home options for people. Bellingham is currently considering a few different approaches to how the city could grow over the next 20 years. One of the growth options presented by the City is a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) approach. TOD is focused on the creation of compact, high-density, walkable, mixed-use communities centered around public transportation systems. The option provided by Engage Bellingham visioned large-scale housing focused along high-frequency transit routes with middle housing around it and the addition of three new Urban Villages. Like any approach to urban planning, there are pros and cons to TOD. 👍 TOD can offer more efficient and reliable public transportation for increased access to jobs, services, and local businesses. Plus, when more people take public transportation it’s better for the environment. 👎 TOD can result in decreased affordability and increased property values which can lead to displacement of low-income & marginalized communities. High density areas can also take a toll on existing infrastructure. What are your thoughts? . . . #AffordableHousing #CommunityDevelopment #BellinghamHousing #HousingAffordability #ComprehensivePlan #HousingForBellingham
