BMO Centre at Stampede Park welcomes the world to Western Canada’s largest convention centre On June 5, 2024, Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), The Calgary Stampede Stampede, and their partners celebrated the grand opening of the BMO Centre at Stampede Park, marking its official status as Western Canada’s largest convention centre. Calgary’s BMO Centre at Stampede Park is officially now Western Canada’s largest convention centre, with the grand opening of its 565,000sqft expansion. Following decades of planning and four years of construction, the over 1,000,000sqft Tier 1 convention facility opens its doors for the first time, not only creating an architectural landmark for Calgary, but making gatherings even greater with the ability to host a scale of convention the city hasn’t been able to previously accommodate. Joel Cowley, CEO of the Calgary Stampede, said: "For four years, we have been promising that the expanded BMO Centre will offer Calgarians, southern Albertans and visitors to our city a greater way to gather. Today, it is with immeasurable pride that we open the doors to the BMO Centre at Stampede Park. The BMO Centre expansion was built for Calgary and southern Alberta, with the vision of creating a world-class facility both in terms of design and the ability to provide exceptional guest experiences through our signature western hospitality.   "With the interest we’ve seen from the meetings and conventions industry before the doors have even opened, we know that this facility is going to have a positive impact on Calgary’s economy by bolstering the tourism and hospitality sectors. We built this for our future, and we look forward to realising the success of the expansion in the decades to come." The building, designed by leading design team Stantec, Populous and S2 Architecture, represents the next generation of convention facilities, one that promises best-in-class guest experience, boasts precedent-setting design architecture, and serves as a gathering place for convention attendees and the local community alike. No wonder every city, state and country wants to build a convention centre; the opportunities appear limitless, as can be seen following birthday celebrations at two venues in recent weeks. In May Christchurch’s purpose-built convention centre, Te Pae, celebrated its second year of operation and is doing very nicely indeed, while in Sydney, the ICC’s management team has just inked another 10 year deal after a bumper seven years running the mega-venue. ASM Global’s ICC Sydney management team opened the ICC Sydney in December 2016. Seven years on it is well on target for delivering $5 billion in economic benefit for the venue’s first 25 years of operation. At the end of year seven the ICC Sydney has delivered 3,665 core events and welcomed 6.4 million attendees who have been estimated to have spent $3.9 billion in the local economy. That’s everything from accommodation to food to transport and no doubt some shopping thrown in for good measure. And to top off all that good news, ICC Sydney CEO and Group Director of Convention Centres at ASM Global (APAC), Geoff Donaghy, said benefits extend even further to the venue’s long supply chain including regional NSW food and wine producers, creative arts and community partners. “ICC Sydney’s mission continues to be to make a difference for greater Sydney and NSW residents, visitors and businesses, and our extensive calendar of events has already contributed to 7.22 million hotel room nights and the creation of 21,395 jobs in the local economy,” he said. “The venue has also spent $370 million with local suppliers, including $65 million spent directly with NSW food and beverage suppliers.” Across the ditch in Christchurch, more than 200,000 attendees have taken part in events at Te Pae since the convention centre hosted its first event in May 2022. The 458 events held at Te Pae Christchurch over the past two years have included 146 multi day conferences – 29 of which were international – 19 exhibitions, 131 banquets, 157 meetings and five live performances. In total, these events have attracted 204,420 attendees over the past 24 months. The impressive economic and broader benefits for the city and the region are the reason the New Zealand Government invested in Te Pae as part of the Central Christchurch Recovery Plan which was developed after the devastating earthquake in 2011. Explains John O’Hagan, chief executive of Rau Paenga Limited, the Crown infrastructure delivery agency that built and owns the facility, the goal was to catalyse spending and social activity in the central city for decades to come by building an international standard convention centre within walking distance of hotels, shops and restaurants. That vision appears to certainly be paying dividends now, with Te Pae general manager, Ross Steele, saying the venue has far outstripped all expectations in the first two years. It's not unexpected that LA has found a way to complete an expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center ahead of the LA28 Olympics. Congratulations to Adam Burke and the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board. Some notes: The facility currently hosts almost 200 meetings and events and attracts 2 million visitors a year. The expansion will add: - 190,000 square feet to connect the South and West Exhibit Halls, creating one contiguous hall - 55,000 square feet of new meeting room space - 95,000 square feet of multipurpose space - Public open space and an outdoor event venue at the Gilbert Lindsay Plaza. What this means for the destination: - 7,445 construction jobs and 2,147 ongoing jobs - 50,000 additional attendee days annually - $165 million in additional revenue annually - $30 million added to the city's general fund tax revenue each year To make this happen, the city is entering a public-private partnership with AEG (sister company to ASM Global, which manages the venue) and Plenary Americas. The partnership involves designing, building, financing, operating, and maintaining the expanded venue. Hamburg Convention Bureau Exciting and diverse locations, an impressive range of hotels, good accessibility and one of the largest and most modern congress centres in Europe – these are the first attributes that describe Hamburg as a congress metropolis. Today we would like to take you with us and introduce our city from a MICE point of view. The city is the star. And the city has it all! Around 1.8 million inhabitants within the city limits and 5.2 million people living in the metropolitan region. Hamburg is a port and Hanseatic city – with a great tradition, because Hamburg was the first container port in Germany. Nevertheless, it is an extremely green metropolis: with over 200 parks and 4,900 hectares of public green spaces, 72 % of the city area in Hamburg is green. This can be seen and felt in every corner of the city. More than 2,500 bridges cross the numerous canals and waterways that criss-cross the city. If we look at the MICE location, Hamburg has around 362 hotels with over 66,000 beds and almost 35,000 rooms – across all star categories. As you can see, Hamburg is a city worth visiting. Especially if you are planning your own MICE event. Some examples of conventions that have been visible worldwide were the Lions Clubs International Convention in the summer of 2013 with around 23,000 guests from all over the world and the Rotary International Convention 2019, which attracted more than 26,000 guests from 170 countries to Hamburg. Despite all the world congresses we have hosted, Hamburg is still a sleeping beauty. A “hidden gem” within the international meetings industry.
