When it comes to economic development, it's imperative you focus on your EXISTING businesses FIRST. What do they need to grow? How can you best support them? Too often, I see folks focusing on the attraction piece, and not spending your end of time on the business owners that have invested for years already in their community. It's no different than offering that new internet customer a crazy awesome deal while ignoring your current customers. Reach out to your current businesses and do everything you can to help them GROW!

Wage justice has been the forefront of my strategic priorities for my organization, and I have unfortunately continued to face push back and backlash because of the pervasive ideology that nonprofit workers aren’t supposed to make living wages and have made the decision to choose careers where being under market and pay cuts are expected. Without funders and leaders committed to pay equity, it is becoming increasingly difficult if not impossible to retain quality, passionate, out-performing staff who continue to do the people’s work in the Bay Area. Low-income in this area is $120,000 — by that metric, all of my staff falls below that line. Compounded by the fact that everyone on my team comes from the communities they serve, are the first and oftentimes, the only person in their entire families to graduate high school, go to college, and get a professional job; they continue to carry the generational trauma and financial burden of carrying the rest of their families on their backs. Attrition and burn out will continue to happen in this space when the expectation is for us to have bleeding hearts and wallets.

We believe marketing services should be more accessible to those who face disadvantages in business due to lack of access to funding, marginalization, or physical or mental health challenges. That's why we started our Thrive Together program! 1-2% of our gross income goes into a special fund that allows us to give marketing credits to organizations that are: 1) 501c3 Nonprofit Serving a Local Community 2) Woman or Minority Owned Business (at least 50%) 3) Military Veteran or First Responder-owned business (at least 50%) This program is entirely self-funded because these are my people. I'm a military mom x2, and a law enforcement officer wife. I'm a woman business owner. I have worked in nonprofits and raised support.
