A key part of our talent strategy at Aldermore Group is to provide equity of opportunity in financial services. The workplace safari opens our doors for students to explore various jobs in finance and gain insights into the necessary skills. These experiences boost student engagement and prepare them for the world of work.   On Wednesday 26th June at Alsager School, our #InspiredFutures team hosted the Year 10 #Careers Focus Day.  The motivational talk at the start of the day was delivered by our keynote speaker Grant Speed, Managing Director of Odgers Interim, an international executive recruitment company.  Grant re-iterated the importance of having a positive digital footprint, planning for your future and being #resilient & #persistent, if and when, challenges or rejection arise. The students were able to choose 4 different sessions to take part in on the day which were led by post-16/18 education providers, employers, and alumni from a wide range of industries including representatives from: NHS, STRATEGI SOLUTIONS GROUP LIMITED, LLS, RSM, Staffordshire University, Lench Building Group, Cheshire Police, Arnold Clark, RSPCA, Newcastle College (Newcastle Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG), Boyco (Digital Marketing & Media), Balfour Beatty, Barclays UK and the Army.  School staff, who are experts in their field, also ran sessions on careers in Psychology, and Law alongside Barristers from 7 Harrington Street Chambers in which students were given the opportunity to participate in a ‘mock trial’. In addition, Keele University ran a session on university life and the DWP & ASK Apprenticeship teams supported students on exploring #apprenticeship opportunities.     After all the planning and effort put into the day, we would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone involved in helping us make this an #inspiring careers day. Steve Jobs said “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” As #CareersLeaders - it is essential we support our students on their careers journey by providing the necessary information, guidance and aspirational opportunities so all young people can find a job which they love! Already we are evaluating the day so that we can make it even better and more relevant to the students next year. We would love to offer careers sessions on industries that the students might not have much awareness or exposure to such as; #logistics, #aviation #greenindustries #civilservice. 🌟 Celebrating Youth Employment Week! 🌟 Today's theme is "Grow Day" and we had an inspiring Q&A session with Elisha Jacks, one of our Haven Degree-Apprentices in Business Management. 🌱✨ Q: How has being an apprentice helped you grow both professionally and personally? Professionally, being an apprentice has helped me develop many new skills. I've learned about different areas of the business, the systems and technology we use, and I've honed my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while working in a professional environment. 📈💼 On a personal level, the experience has been equally rewarding. Rotating through different departments has allowed me to interact with a diverse group of people and appreciate various viewpoints. I've faced new challenges daily, building my resilience and adaptability, and learned to balance work responsibilities with my personal life and degree assignments. It’s equipping me with all the essential skills needed for my career growth. 🌟🧩 Q: How did you discover your current career path, and what advice would you give to young people exploring their options? My career path began with a part-time job while I was still in school. Initially, it was a way to earn some money and gain work experience, but I quickly fell in love with the company culture and the supportive environment at Haven. As I took on more responsibilities, I realised how much I enjoyed working here, which led to my decision to stay with the company full-time and pursue this apprenticeship. My advice to young people is to be open to exploring opportunities that come your way. Reflect on the type of work environment where you feel you would thrive and take every opportunity to learn new skills and gain knowledge. These steps have led me to where I am now! 🌍🔍 Q: What have you done to build your professional network (internally or externally), and how has it helped your career? I've volunteered for cross-departmental projects to meet and work with team members outside my immediate team, broadening my internal network. Being on this degree has not only helped me gain new skills but also provided opportunities to connect with colleagues across the UK who share similar professional interests. As National Apprenticeship Week wraps up, it's been fantastic seeing so many businesses showing their gratitude for, and celebrating their apprentices! But, let's take a moment to reflect on some important findings from recent research by Randstad. They discovered that 44% of Gen Z individuals feel like their bosses don't fully understand them. That's a significant number! At the same time, more than a quarter of young professionals feel hesitant to share their thoughts at work, and a staggering 75% feel the need to hide aspects of themselves due to fear of judgement or discrimination. These are concerning figures that point to a potential communication gap. Are some of these numbers represented in your workplace? How can you find out? Have you asked them? 1000s of Apprentices DROP OUT every year! 🚨 Yes, according to recent research, at least 47% of apprentices in the UK dropout before completing their programs. I recently read a blog by Megan Thomas, who shared her early career experience online. She dove into various early careers settings and it was a rollercoaster of highs and lows. "Some were amazing, where they encouraged me to contribute in meetings, and considered my ideas. I’d have 1:1 support and they genuinely wanted to help me succeed in my future career”. But others left her on the verge of quitting, multiple times. This isn’t an unique story. So why do they risk it all and drop out? Well…there are many reasons but I’ll name two: ❌ Lack of support from training providers and firms  ❌ Employer-tutor communication gap The message is clear: Provide the RIGHT support and RESOURCES to your early career professionals. As mentioned by Megan, that can be 1:1 support sessions. That’s why I started 1:2:1 coaching to support early career professionals: ✅ 1:1 coaching sessions offer individual support, confidence and aims to provide tools to build mental resilience.
