The best start to the new school year that I could ask for. AND ! The power of employer engagement, which is part of my role which I absolutely love! Jonnys Journey now has an positive next step! I started working with this student when he was in year 12. He has cerebral palsy. As a young person with a disability, his main concern was What’s out there for someone like me? We worked together figuring out what Jonny would like to become, and what he’d like his early career to look like. His main focus was a vocational pathway, ideally an apprenticeship. Along the way, we were so grateful for the wider engagement with Ideagen and Nottingham Forest and for all of their support. This has helped Jonny to see that meaningful occupations are out there, despite additional needs and barriers. As we reached summer term, with an application for an apprenticeship in, we were keeping everything crossed. Unfortunately that opportunity didn’t happen. Amazingly, a conversation with another employer link, who I’ve know for many years, and things are looking more positive! I explained the back story and a meeting was soon arranged to explore possibilities. HUGE Thank you Tim Beech for listening, for arranging to meet with our student, for understanding his passion to get into the world of world, and importantly, to look beyond the barriers he faces in everyday life and to offer a chance! In October Jonnny will be commencing employment for Ergo IT Services, in a Business Support role, where he will onboard with some exciting project work, with a review after six months. Jonny listened to me and understood that sometimes we need to keep open minded and widen our search across related careers. I cannot tell you how happy this collaboration made me feel and following a meeting at the business last week, it was great to see how this employer is putting measures in place, so that Jonny can have a combination of in person and hybrid work life balance. What a great team he will work with too! Never give up, understand the uniqueness of every young person and the potential that they have. #notjusttalkingaboutjobs! #HOPE. #Plannedhappenstance #disabilityawareness I just love a happy ending.
Wow, this is amazing! Kudos to everyone involved, especially Tim Beech and Ergo IT Services. Jonny's journey is a testament to what's possible with support and belief. Can't wait to hear more updates on his progress. Keep shining, Jonny!
Just incredible! What an inspirational story and what a fantastic employer. I know personally how hard you’ve worked for this. I’m always proud of you but this is all down to you and your refusal to give up on this student. Well done my friend 🌸
This is a great story Louise. I wish Jonny all the best. I love your relentless approach and the way that you fight for every young person. Just brilliant!

Wonderful news. ☺️
Passionate about careers being embedded from a young age. We must ensure that young people leave school with the skills, knowledge & experience to make their P16 decisions and navigate their future career with ease.
11moI felt emotional reading this Louise. Every young person matters and the work that you're doing is so valuable. I'm so pleased for Jonny and for what he will inevitably bring to the organisation. And great to see supportive employers giving young people their first step on the ladder.
