A National Institutes of Health (NIH) study recently found that a lack of institutional support may be keeping healthcare providers from treating substance misuse and calls "greater education, training, and policies to increase adoption of evidence-based care for addiction." Kentucky is already addressing this concern thanks to two projects seeking to increase education and training for healthcare providers, our Office on Women's Health - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services funded, Focus on Integrating Response, Screening, and staff Training (FIRST) initiative and a effort by the Kentucky Public Health Department to teach substance misuse screening to birthing providers. https://lnkd.in/ed4_XwMu

Trained peer counselors (training we do at lifeprocessprogram.com) lead to superior outcomes. “Patients who have had a non-fatal overdose are at great risk of a fatal overdose in the future, and more than 1 in 4 high-risk patients in Rhode Island has a non-fatal opioid overdose within 18 months of leaving the hospital. [Do you think many people go to these facilities?] A drug to treat opioid use disorder safely and effectively exists — but few ER providers prescribe it.” [So doctors don’t actually provide this treatment — which would require patient compliance to actually take place.]
