"The Black Panther Party made food central to their political action because food, and hunger, have always been political issues." At this time of year there are many calls for food donations - these can be useful but we must remember that food banks are a sticking plaster and not a solution. Read our piece on how food is political & the power of community meals.

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine’s mission is to provide a reliable food rescue service by fostering community connections to reduce food waste and food insecurity. ➡️ 40% of food produced in this country is wasted — while 42 million Americans remain food insecure. RLC volunteers rescue food along the way home from work or to class and help feed millions of hungry Americans while offsetting carbon emissions. “It's the first time in my life that I’ve found an organization that does the kind of work that aligns with something that I’ve been through," says Nathan, a volunteer from New York. "I experienced food insecurity, food pantries, and welfare in my early 20s. It brings together people that wouldn’t otherwise come together with different backgrounds to transport excess food. I’ll be a part of it for as long as I’m here.” Learn more about how you can make an impact in the hunger crisis in America by getting in touch with our Philanthropy Advisor: goodnation.io/donors Photo from Rescuing Leftover Cuisine. - #foodinsecurity #hungercrisis #foodwaste #hunger #poverty #foodrescue #endpoverty #philanthropy #philanthropyadvising #nonprofits #socialimpact

True nonprofit growth or expansion happens when we acknowledge food as a human right for all, delivered in the way people define DIGNITY for themselves. 🍽️ A government leader asked if I wanted to expand across Pennsylvania or the nation. I replied, "Our program adapts to the needs of the people. We will never force a community to conform to our program. So, how do you define expand?" Expanding is a delicate issue when fighting hunger. We cannot treat hunger as a business or a platform for our egos. Often, the reality of hunger is misunderstood—it's secretive, heavy, dark, frightening, and political. Hunger is used as tool of power over people in ways most of us will never comprehend, nor dare to explore. It's easy to create solutions for the sake of recognition, accolades, awards, and funding. The real challenge is being a witness to hunger. This requires us to stop and listen with a full heart. It requires hard conversations and the humility to say, "I have it wrong." 🍽️ Food is personal. 🔒 Food is safety. ❤️ Food is love. 💪 Food is empowerment. 🕊️ Food is freedom. #FoodDignity #FoodDignityMovement

Executive Director at Park View Community Mission | Helping individuals and organizations understand the needs of our food-insecure, unemployed, and homeless neighbors | DM to learn more
September is Hunger Action Month! I'm grateful for the opportunity to speak up about and address food-insecurity everyday with Park View Community Mission! When I was a full-time pastor, a group within the church wanted to organize a meal packing event with what was then known as Stop Hunger Now (now Rise Against Hunger). It was the opportunity to fund and pack thousands of meals in just a couple of hours. As leadership discussed the project, one leader claimed the very name of the organization was heretical because Jesus said "you always have the poor with you" as a kind of justification for not feeding those without enough to eat. There was no consideration of every time Jesus fed people or advocated for feeding people. First, it was just a gross misuse of scripture. Just a complete obliteration of the context. Jesus didn't make that statement so his followers would have an "out" when it came to fulfilling the very basic biblical principal of feeding those without enough to eat. Second, I confess that I didn't push back hard enough in that leadership meeting, and I'm ashamed I didn't call out the abuse of scripture and lack of concern for neighbor as clearly as a pastor should. I should have taken action then because people who follow Jesus should take action on the issue of hunger. I'm trying to do better. Feed your neighbor. Speak up for your neighbor. Advocate for your neighbor in your church, in your community, and to your elected officials. Take action! #HungerActionMonth #FoodInsecurity #TakeAction (Photo caption: Kim and I did eventually get to participate in a similar meal packing event in 2017 with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship)
