This year, a record 101 youth organizations participated in the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation’s Ignite the Spirit program. Through this program, FFA, 4-H and other youth-based organizations receive $500 and 4 cases of pork loin to create their own service project to address hunger and food insecurity in their community. Organizations pick up the pork loins at Operation Christmas Meal stops throughout the month of December and then work with other hunger-fighting organizations in their area to prepare their project. Examples of projects include community meals and holiday meal boxes. Groups were spread across the whole state, with projects occurring in 47 counties.

The supermarket Christmas ads have started, which means we have entered the season of food overload. It is also a time when we are understandably encouraged by food poverty causes to donate to those who are less fortunate. Over the past year I have provided pro bono marketing advice for BAGS OF TASTE, which helps thousands of people facing challenging circumstances cook better, eat better, feel better and save money. Rather than simply providing a handout - although participants in the programme receive a free bag of healthy ingredients - Bags of Taste empowers people to make healthy choices for themselves and their families. The evidence shows that this positive behavioural change is sustained over the long term and the programme is also proven to improve health and wellbeing. I think this is a great way to support and empower people in need, not just over the Christmas period but throughout the year, and to use the therapeutic power of home cooking to transform lives. Give to the Max Day is here! Today is a celebration of the incredible abundance of our community. It is a day to look within ourselves to acknowledge and share the unique abundance in each of our lives: How am I showing up for my neighbors today? How can I challenge attitudes of scarcity, when I know that our community has each other's backs? What can I do today to make sure my neighbors know they can count on our community safety net? 2024 is the hungriest year our community has ever seen. CEAP is on track for a record amount of food served as we see the highest need for our Food Market in our 52-year history. 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 The burden falls heaviest on 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧, with food insecurity rates at 22% and 21% respectively, compared to 9% for white households. 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬, 𝐔𝐧𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 While rural areas tend to have higher SNAP participation rates, many urban families facing greater need struggle due to several factors such as a higher cost of living. 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭: 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 Programs like ours, The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation Get Ready Fest, offer a lifeline. We provide 7-10 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬' 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬, a critical time when expenses surge. This helps ease the burden for families facing food insecurity and allows them to focus on other necessities for their children. Did you know that September is #HungerActionMonth? 🍊 It’s a nationwide effort led by Feeding San Diego to raise awareness about hunger locally and throughout the United States to inspire action.   Nearly 300,000 people in San Diego County are food insecure, meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from.   Among the organizations addressing this issue and filling the void is #ProduceGood, a 2023 San Diego Foundation Community Food Grant Program partner.
