Today I learned about the "Prove-It-Again" bias. Lilly Singh mentions it in her fabulous TED Talk "'A seat at the table' isn't the solution for gender equity" (h/t Surabhi Pokhriyal for sharing the link). If you're not familiar with the "Prove-It-Again" bias, the WOMEN LAWYERS OF UTAH INC describe this as referring to the necessity for women to prove themselves again and again across their careers. Due to negative gender and racial stereotypes about competence and work commitment, women and people of color are often assumed to lack the competence and commitment to sustain a successful professional career. So on this IWD, whether you identify as a women or consider yourself an ally to gender equity in the workplace, I encourage you to ask yourself; have you ever approached a colleague, teammate, or direct report with the 'Prove-It-Again' Bias? If the answer is no, keep up the great work and encourage others to do the same! If the answer is yes, I hope you can consciously take note and actively work to give the women in your network/on your team/around you a seat at the table that they can thrive in, so they don't have to 'Prove-It-Again'!! https://lnkd.in/ehzpgkpv

In my latest Forbes article, I explore the stark realities facing women in leadership as revealed by the The Associated Press' latest findings: 'This is the highest number of women to be considered top-paid CEOs since the inception of the AP’s annual survey.' Although we've reached a record 25 female CEOs among S&P 500 companies, representing just over 7%, it’s clear we're far from enough. Credits: Reasearch HBR 🚀 In Nov 2022, the EU set a visionary goal: by 2026, women should make up 40% of non-exec directors on public firm boards. 🌟 Why? To foster gender balance, transparent appointments, and fair assessments based on merit, not gender. But does having women in boardrooms make a substantial difference in their actual functioning? 👉Firstly, female directors attend board meetings well-prepared and with a sense of responsibility. 👉Secondly, we find that female directors are not shy about admitting when they don't know something, are more willing to ask probing questions, and strive to lay everything on the table.
