Why avoid use of DCP in dry cows/heifers? DCP contains high amounts of Calcium. In fear a condition similar to milk fever in incalf cows and heifers where they suffer from lameness, majority of us consider DCP. This does not really save the situation. It worsens it. Excessive amounts Calcium fed to a dry cow disrupts the balance in its absorption and utilisation in the body. This makes the animal's body fail to avail enough Calcium into the blood when there is high demand leading to challenges such as retained afterbirth and milk fever. Inability to stand in incalf cattle apart from injuries is caused by low amounts of energy in the animal's body. This is a great write-up on the most recent transfer and on the partnerships working to preserve these sought-after genetics and sacred relatives. There must be more testing of RB51 (brucellosis vaccine approved for cattle) on bison in general. There has been testing at the YNP facilities and it has been found to be efficacious in bison. However, the usage has been off-label for these purposes. The thought that must be considered is that elk pose more of a threat for spreading brucellosis to cattle because the elk are not contained and roam freely in and out of cattle herds, feeding areas, and across state lines.

The deadline for responses to the consultation is Tuesday 6th February 2024 - https://lnkd.in/eWsXsPTz It will take 3 minutes of your time and help strengthen the case for proper controls on dipping imported sheep to prevent scab coming into Shetland. Crofters, farmers and anyone with sheep in Shetland are encouraged to respond to the consultation, ahead of proposed changes to the legislation. The changes are deemed necessary in response to increased risk of introduction of sheep scab to Shetland, with rising cases of sheep scab in the rest of the UK.
