With the S&P500 around +26% on a total return basis YTD 2023, what components helped drive the market? About 145 stocks are at or above the 26% YTD return threshold and about 150 stocks have negative YTD returns. Which leaves about 200 names in the "middle of the pack". Major drivers of this year's returns are the usual suspects in tech and communication but also consumer discretionary. Defensive utility sector names suffered in 2023 in the face of higher financing costs. #ETFS

Better than expected. Coming into this week, 78% of S&P 500 stocks have reported earnings that beat estimates this quarter, slightly above the 5-year average of 77%. Despite corporate earnings improving over the quarter, stocks are still getting punished. At the end of October, of the nearly 50% of companies in the S&P 500 who had reported quarterly earnings, nearly 80% of those reported better-than-expected results. Yet, those stocks haven’t enjoyed the lift that we would normally see.
