President of IDSA @ GT | Founder of Design Does That | Industrial Design Student at the Georgia Institute of Technology
My second year of design school was packed full of lessons. It taught me how to manage my time, where to focus my energy, and a ton of skills I never thought I'd learn. Most importantly, a round of applause for this one, people: I had only a couple of all-nighters! A huge improvement from last year. 👏 You might remember the exact moment you learned some of these lessons back in the day, or you might just be getting started on your design journey, either way, this one’s for you. Here are the 12 things I learned during my second year of design school... 1. You have to be the one to set deadlines and requirements for yourself 2. Work hard enough and the opportunities start to come looking for you 3. A few extra points aren't worth killing yourself over 4. If you feel overwhelmed by your own design, it might be a sign to simplify 5. No design project, done the right way, is ever done alone 6. Always talk to the people you're designing for 7. The quicker you start, the faster it'll be over 8. You're not supposed to learn everything all at once 9. Putting effort into your relationships with others pays off 10. Just because you change directions doesn't mean you're behind 11. Stop letting people be too soft on you 12. Betting on yourself is one of the best things you can do 💡I go into a lot more detail in the article on my blog, which is linked in the comments. Check it out if you're curious.💡 I'm about halfway done with my design education and I'm looking forward to the things I'll learn in the future. So now that you've heard from me, I'd like to hear from you. What are some things of the biggest things you learned in design school that still help you out today? Let me know below 👇 I'll be taking notes! ✍️🤓 - 👋 I'm Rebecca Scarbrough, an Industrial Design student at Georgia Tech and the Founder of Design Does That, a blog dedicated to observing the field of design from a student's perspective Follow me if you'd like to tag along throughout my design school experience! Let's go on this journey together 🌱💪 #industrialdesign #designer #designersoflinkedin #designstudents #womenindesign #designschool #designeducation

Apartment Specialist Architect │ University Educator Design-Thinking │ Optimizing property for approvals & increased ROI │ Ex-Mirvac Multi-Res │ Principal & Director SALBASHIAN ARCHITECTS Pty Ltd
Another semester teaching first year students Design-Thinking (Design Processes & Methods DECO1006) at the University of Sydney! We asked the students to analyze a few case studies (products/services/buildings) and determine the design dispositions used by the designers who worked on them. (Refer to the Miro board video of students sharing their ideas). Some of the dispositions, meaning the methods of thinking, design processes and attitudes when designing, includes: -Failure -Iteration -Converse with the situation -Co-evolution of problem and solution -Imagination -Reframing -Creative routines -Reversing assumptions -Paradoxes We then asked them to pledge to use a design disposition they had never used and apply it to their first task. First task: Reimagine a radical way of celebrating birthdays🎈 What design disposition do you tend to naturally gravitate towards when solving a problem for a client? #designdispositions #designtools #designattitutes #designprocesses #teaching #universityofsydney #designthinking #designthinkingprocess

Vice Chancellor at World University of Design; Independent Director; Senator IIT Delhi; Governing Body Member Lady Irwin College DU
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN is almost the first course taught in any in a design degree program for providing students with a solid foundation of concepts such as balance, contrast, rhythm, and emphasis. These principles serve as fundamental guidelines that enable students to analyze, critique, and create effective designs across various mediums. It also plays a pivotal role in communication, as design is fundamentally a form of visual communication. Additionally, studying design principles fosters an appreciation for aesthetics and visual harmony, enabling students to understand why certain designs are visually pleasing or effective. Pedagogically, teachers would often combine lectures, studio work, critiques, workshops, and projects to teach this course. But of course, we at WUD continue to innovate and make our pedagogy different & more effective. Come & experience the innovative fusion of art, fashion and sustainability at our POD-Principles of Design Show. Presented by our Fashion Foundation students, drawing inspiration from diverse artists and art movements, each upcycled garment would tell a unique story of creativity and conscientious design. POD SHOW - 2024 Friday - April 5th, 2024, 3pm onwards At Foundation Studio #principlesofdesign #designfoundation #designeducation #creativefoundation #designtheory #ArtAndDesign #creativeeducation #designfundamentals #designconcept #studiowork #designprojects #innovativepedagogy #artinspiration #fashiondesign #sustainabilitydesign #upcycledfashion #creativeprocess #VisualHarmony #designprinciples #DesignInnovation #studentshowcase #wudexperience #worlduniversityofdesign #bestuniversity

"This yellow Ducky! It sits on a central display in my living room, and has sparked many conversations and smiles, and I even got nicknamed by it! But for me, it reminds me of Creation and Destruction. Deep, right? 😏 - It's six pieces of Lego blocks! Years ago, during a workshop at a dear friend's design studio, we were asked to make as many ducks in a minute out of these 6 blocks. I made 13 and I thought I did great! As it turned out, that wasn't a very high number - there were people who made 25-26! Imagine my feeling of disappointment! 😥 But then I realised something important that made the Creator in me feel very scared and very excited at the same time - the Destroyer in me was taking apart every duck I made, in order to create the next one, while others who made more ducks simply changed the configuration of a duck by moving one block! Yes, some of those ducks looked quite funky, but hey, they were still all ducks! Who's to say they weren't? And they were quite beautiful 🙂 The big learning for me was that in our design process - the Creation, we don't always have to discard everything and start from scratch in our iterations - Destruction. I learned that small pivots in our design process - be it conceptual or otherwise, small shifts of perspective, or just small changes in the way we build something, can make better and more efficient outcomes, and make us and others happy... Now think Climate Change, and ask yourself how many times are you a Creator or a Destroyer in a minute, hour, day or a lifetime? Have you pivoted yet? 😊 So whenever I see the little Ducky in my living room, it prompts me to ask myself - Are you creating or destroying, Sandra? Is there space to pivot and make life better (for all)? Can you make that change? ...And that makes me feel happy 🙂 " Aleksandra Rotar, Founding Director, CMRU School of Design, CMR University. From a series of snapshots themed on "Let's Get Emotional" with you and your emotional object for World Industrial Design Day 2024 which we celebrated on June 29th. #wdomember #designsense #letsgetemotional #widd #worldindustrialdesignday #worlddesignorganisation
